Suggest Treatment For Cold ,cough And Sore Throat

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: Dear Doctor,
I have a history of getting cold, cough and sore throat, which mainly arises due to eating disorders. Lets say I go out and eat some spicy food or junk food, firstly it will make infections in my throat causing lots of pain, which will then translate into high level cold and cough and does not get better.
The similar situation happens when I overeat or fast. However, it happens on a random basis and not necessarily in every similar situation, I described before. Also it may happen anytime, sometimes in months, sometimes in weeks. I have researched a lot on this topic. I found out that it is mainly due to GERD (Gastroesphagus reflux disease) and every time, I visit an ENT doctor who prescribes me certain medicines line Romilast L, Montemac L, Cortimax, stating that there is no permanent ssoultion to this.
This has been happening quite frequently and I desperately need your help and guidance in this regard. Just to mention, I had a tonisllities operation 5 years back, wherein my tonsillitis was removed.

I have been totally confused in this regard, as the cause is my stomach and effects are seen in sinus (throat, nose and ears). especially throat infection is very painful and takes lot of time to reduce.
Also, to mention my stomach is very sensitive to any high dosage medicines like antibiotics etc.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This means that your throat is sensitive. Get a video-laryngoscopy done and upload the images or video here.

2. The palatine tonsils that were removed is only a small part of the entire lymphoid tissue in the throat and nose. This tissue is likely to be inflamed or sensitized and unless it treated effectively, your symptoms will continue.

3. GERD increases sinusitis and a post nasal drip (which usually get worse after eating fast or overeating) all tend to worsen each other. This is common and not a surprising finding in many people. I would check the video-laryngoscopy (VL'Scopy) for signs of reflux. If there is reflux even after taking Pan 40, I would add a prokinetic agent. Treatment duration should be at least 8 to 12 weeks with strict diet control. Food Intolerance can be tested.

4. Further treatment options ca be discussed with your VL'Scopy images.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Thanks Doctor for your suggestions. I have some additional queries below:

As of now, I am suffering from acute throat pain, sore throat, cold and cough because of this. What medicines do I take - I am taking pan40, but how do I control the pain and reduce the cold, cough and throat infection.

Which part of the body should I do the video laryngoscopy.
If I want to consult a doctor face to face, which department should i consult - ent or gastro dept

what are the food restrictions, you would advise. I am a pure vegetarian.

Thanks a lot for your help,

Regards,

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. For the acute symptoms, a weeks course of a broad spectrum antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory, an anti-allergic, a medicated oral rinse and a cough syrup will be required on prescription from a local physician.

2. A videolaryngoscopy is done to visualize the throat and larynx (voice box) by an ENT Specialist.

3. Non oily, non spicy and smaller meals will suffice at the moment.

I hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
