Suggest Treatment For Cold And Flu

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Oct 2014
Question: 30 years, male. I have cold or flu(sneezing, sore throat and watery eyes) since 3 days now. I was feeling better since today morning, but was feeling that mucus in my nose was getting little solid and was feeling little bit of irritation in nose. Today evening I tried to forcefully blow my nose and throat to clear up all mucus..In the process, I noticed a very very small streak of blood and it scared the hell out of me. As a nervous person, I want to know is this anything serious and what is probably the cause of it?. Do I need to run to doctor now again? (Also, note I had all kinds of blood tests(WBC, ESR, Lipids etc.) , chest X-ray and so on last month..Everything is clear..Also, been to ENT a month back and was all fine)

Brief Answer:
nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

You need not worry as this is a common phenomenon and the reason is that you had inflammation of the nasal mucosal lining because of infection.

As you tried to forcefully blow, the inflamed mucosa tends to break with micro lacerations and thus bleeding occurs.

Please use nasal decongestant drops for 3- 4 days . Also steam lnhalation will help in reducing the congestion.

Feel free to ask another query.

Regards.

Thanks Doc for reply.

I did as my mother suggested me to take all the mucus forcefully(and in XXXXXXX most folks do it). I couldn't make out that tiny blood streak was from nose or throat. Does that matter?. As nervous, I tried coughing several times to see if I can see any blood, but there was no blood. I also have nasal septum deviation, could that also cause this issue?. I have no fever, no coughing, no weight loss, no breathing problem or anything, but seeing this small tiny blood spot, am freaked out thinking that there is something serious in it?. Also, given my clean blood tests(cbc, esr, various other tests), ultrasound, chest X-ray and no other symptoms, can I rest this freaking mind?.

Brief Answer:
don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for the query.

There is nothing to worry. Blood is from nose as per your history.

DNS is independent of this episode of bleeding as DNS must have been there before this episode.

So, just relax and avoid blowing forcefully.

My question is am not sure whether it came from throat or nose. So, wanted to make sure I can still relax if that came from throat right(given all the tests - chest x-ray, ultrasound and blood tests I had done last month and no other symptoms) as I think there is a common pipe b/w throat and nose?..Sorry for pestering, but that's my real worry to anxious mind.

Brief Answer:
your history doesn't support from throat

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.

Your history doesn't support from throat.

Otherwise similar to the nose, because of sore throat and inflammation, streaks of blood in sputum are common and usually self limiting.

So, you need not worry for single episode of bleeding in nsal discharge or sputum.

There is no need for tests and your tests areĀ normal even otherwise.

Feel free to ask another query.
