Question: Is it ok to discontinue medications, other than anti-biotics, if the symptoms improve?..when my 2 year old daughter has cold and cough (which is asthmatic/Hyper Sensitive Airways) episodes..she was given citazine syrup with salbutamol syrup/and recently omnacortil and pulmorex...it was prescribed for 5/7 days 2-3 times a day...but wen she showed improvement I discontinued by 3/4 day and once after 1 day...especially bcos it was very hard to make her take the medicines...is discontinuing bad?...
Is it ok to mix precribed syrups together to administer to baby? This is cos sometimes its so traumatic to make her take medicines one after other...

Brief Answer:
Can be discontinued.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.

These are for symptomatic relief and it is OK to discontinue the medicines if situation improves. It will not harm if discontinued. Antibiotics do not help in case of viral infections which are the most common cause of cough and cold. However, if given, you should complete the course. Cetirizine can be given in such occasions but I would not prefer other cough syrups. Rather, giving steam inhalation should help.

Doctor before 1.5 years my daughter just had some 4 colds caused by exposure to kids with cold and getting wet..i gave her coriminic drops on doctor prescription and twice paracetamol when she had throat pain at night...once she had cough but it dissapeared on it own..but after vaccine at 1.5 years in nov 2015, she has been having cold every month except feb..in dec and april cos of exposure to kids with cold. XXXXXXX and march cos of playing in water..this month few days ago too..I think cos of climate change..my husband has a history of childhood asthma..

The cold develops into unproductive cough that doesnt stop..in dec, wen I tried to manage her symptoms at home she got wheezing.. doctor gave her antibiotic, ambroxol hydrochloride and salbutamol syrup..I followed prescription...in XXXXXXX I saw another doctor who gave citrizine and levolin..he said its hypersensitive airways which cud develop into asthma...I stopped medicines wen she improved..in march she had mild cold and cough..I gave her citrizine and levolin without doctor prescription..in april she got cold and then cough..levolin didnt work..so I tuk her to doctor...he prescribed omnacortil and pulmorex and citizine...in may (that is two days ago) she had mild cold and persistent cough..I gave her omnacortil and pulmorex without doctor consultation...just two doses..it improved... she wont sit in steam cries terribly...

My questions- 1) for mild episodes is it ok if I follow previous months prescription?..this is a regular affair now...and she responds to couple of doses...; 2) is it necessary to give pulmorex and omnacortil together?.. her cough is unproductive asthmatic type...isnt omnacortil enough?.. yesterday I gave her pulmorex alone at noon but she coughed all day..wen I gave omnacortil in the evening she got better..3) some doctors prescribe antibiotics for viral/allergic infections like my daughters..why do they do that?..even wen she doesnt show congestion, they prescibe antibiotics just in case..is it ok to avoid that prescription?...4)is it ok to combine two syrups like citrizine and omnacortil on one measuring cap for administering to my daughter?.. sometimes wen there are three syrups to be given at a time its so hard to make her drink one after another...

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for describing in detail.
The frequent episodes of cough are not related to the vaccination but may have a loose association with her father's childhood history. However most often childhood asthma does not progress upto adulthood and hence you need not worry. If she has wheezing, cetirizine and levolin would be essential. Antibiotics can be required but your doctor can judge it best by analyzing the symptoms. Antibiotics are not to be given routinely. Omnacortil is a last resort and not to be taken on routine basis. No problems in combining pulmorex with omnacortil.
Viral infections are frequently associated with allergic reaction and hence the antiallergics are given along. Cold temperatures depress the immunity and make the children more prone to catching cold.
No problems in using same measuring cap for omnacortil and cetirizine and if there is some admixture. No problem if the three syrups are given one after the other.

Dear doctor..
thanks for the reply..however I would be obliged if u cud giv me a little more clarity and specificity...most of my questions are related to my concern to avoid as much medicines as possible because my child is getting sick every month..i feel you are also concerned abt the amount and type of medicines but some doctors arent...thats why i need to know...may b my questions need to b reframed...

1) doctor as of now she doesnt respond to levolin (may b the dosage is low)....only omnacortil..I know omnacortil is a steroid medication...what is an alternative to omnacortil?...is nebulization with ventolin an option for my girl?

2) is pulmorex essential?.. is it ok to avoid pulmorex, as am giving omnacortil and she is responding well? That is does pulmorex have other functions which omnacortil doesnt?

3) if a doctor says after examination with stethescope "she has no symptom of wheezing or congestion in chest, but just in case am prescribing an anti-biotic".. shud I comply?

4) if I hav to give her 3 syrups- citrizine 2.5ml, pulmorex 2.5 ml and omnacortil 2.5ml..is it ok to pour it all together in a container..that is 7.5ml and give it to my daughter?

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would be greatly beneficial.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Sorry for not being able to respond faster.

Let me try to address the issues one by one:
* Levolin is a bronchodilator which reduces wheezing. If there is no wheezing or noisy breathing, there is nothing that Levolin can do. It does not make any sense to give Levolin in such a case.
* If given, nebulizer is a far better option that syrup. Here it reaches the target organ direct and therefore has better action and lesser side effects.
* Omnacortil does not relieve cough. Irrespective of treatment with such medications or antibiotics, the cough will last for 5-7 days and sometimes more. Omnacortil needs to be given only in case of noisy breathing and respiratory distress.
* Pulmorex is not essential and may be left out.
* If there is no definite indication like wheezing or raised blood counts, I would strongly advise against giving antibiotics. It is a very bad practice that many doctors do. If you follow my suggestion, I would not insist you to comply with such a doctor in such a case.
* The three (if given) can be mixed without any problems.
* Steam inhalation really helps. It reaches deep inside and helps in diluting the cough and thus provides relief.
