Suggest Treatment For Anemia And Weakness When Having Atrial Fib

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Mar 2015
Question: I am a 78 yo woman who has, over the past several months, become quite anemic and weak. Two weeks ago I prepped for an endoscopy & a colonoscopy but while being monitored prior to them, I was having atrial fib, so the procedures were postponed. An echocardiogram did not show anything significant. Last evening, returned home from road trip & started unloading van. I have a bad hip, which makes going up & down stairs difficult. During that I had 2 martinis, my usual but not usually so fast. When sitting down after that, became very dizzy. It was ~7pm & had not eaten since about one o'clock. Got up to go to bedroom to lie down. Could not walk and had to crawl up stairs. Could not stand up to get in bed. Partner brought an English muffin, but I couldn't eat it. Was not nauseated, just weak & dizzy. After maybe half an hour, was able to get up, get undressed and get in bed. It would seem that I was drunk, but I had no hangover this a.m. I seldom drink enough to have a hangover, but if the previous evening's problems were caused by alcohol, I surely would have. I would like for you to please tell me what you think was going on. It would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Go to ER - get examined & investigated

Detailed Answer:
Hi friend
Welcome to Health Care Magic

It may mean Cerebro Vascular Insufficiency – reduced blood supply to the brain…
A-fib could have recurred without the feeling of palpitation… / and one needs to exclude embolism (dislodged clot)

The body's balancing mechanism is in the inner ear. ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialists have special tests to confirm or exclude the contribution of the ear.
If the ear is excluded, neurologic assessment is in order. / MRI may be needed. MRA (MRI angiography) shows blood vessels and is generally done at the same sitting.
If there are no clues, you have to be reviewed by your Cardiologist! ECHOcardiogram is reassuring - excludes structural defects... / HOLTER (24 to 48 hour ambulatory monitoring – for arrhythmia) / / TMT (Treadmill exercise ECG – for ischemia) / LABORATORY work-up – may all be necessary for further assessment and assistance.

The treating doctor may suggest them depending on need, based on his assessment of the situation.

Go to ER – you need examination / and a few basic investigations…

Good luck
God bless you
