Suggest Treatment For Altered Sense Of Taste

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Nov 2015
Question: I recently returned from a mission trio to XXXXXXX and have been sick ever since. I'm waiting for test results but one of the symptoms I'm experiencing is a heightened sense of taste. Salty foods taste SO salty, almost the same effect as biting into lemon, and sweet things are over the top sweet and very unpleasant. What could be causing this?

Brief Answer:
Too many causes...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Heightened sense of taste is not specific to a single medical condition. I also assume you do not have any known medical illness or on medications. In this circumstance, considering it started after a mission trip to XXXXXXX where the environment is too hot and harsh, I might suspect dehydration and electrolyte disturbance to be causing it. I really don't feel there are infection possibilities unless you have other symptoms of malaise, body aches, fever and pain going on. Further since you are waiting for tests results, it should clarify our doubts about infection if any.

Therefore I think you should wait for test results. If none is found, then perhaps I recommend you drink plenty of fluids along with fresh fruits and start antacids. In the meantime you may ask for an ENT referral to investigate for local infections of nose, throat and salivary glands and also get your serum electrolytes tested.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
