Suggest Treatment For IBS And GERD

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: Suffering from stomach issue for a long time. Final analysis of the doctor is IBS.
I have took a lot treatment and current issue is as below.
1)     Cannot tolerate spicy food, even a small amount of spice. If I take food with zero spice ( no chlli, no pepper, no garlic, no ginger ) my health is perfect.

If I take any of the above mentioned items my immediate symptoms are
a)     Loss in libido
b)     Stools not clearly formed
c)     Urgency in passing stools
d)     Slight burning sensation while passing stools
e)     After this the whole digestive system is in bad shape and lot of gas and acdity occurs.

Does this above symptoms point to IBS ? Why only for spicy food.
Why does spicy food affect me so badly. This issue started happening only a few years back
Is there any way I can manage this issue. What can I do to avoid this issue?
Tried VSL#3 but doesnt help.
Blood test doesnt show any inflammation of colon

Brief Answer:
Seems like IBS

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through the information you have provided. I have also read the reports that you have uploaded

it seem that you gave GERD ( gastro esophageal reflux disease) along this you also have symptoms of IBS.

I would advise you to continue Nexpro .

Spicy food can cause increase in Symptoms of IBS and GERD. The possible mechanism is due to increased sensitivity of the intestinal mucosal lining to these foods .

Adding Fibre supplement to your diet will Help you.

I would suggest completely avoiding spices for 4- 6 weeks and then gradually re introducing them one spice every week.

Avoid
Chocolate and mint flavoured foods, Citrus fruits, Meat, alcohol, deep fried foods
Limit tea and coffee to less than 3 cups per day. Do not lie down for atleast 3 hours after meals
Get regular Exercise - at least 30 to 40 minutes per day.

Betacap can cause loss of libido. Consult your doctor for a change in prescription if the reduced libido is a persistent problem

Hope this helps

Hi
Thanks for going through the questions and providing your inputs.
I was diagonised with GERD in Nvv 2013 and I took Nexpro for around 3 months and my GERD symptoms are gone. Also I dont take Betcap any longer.
Currently I take flunarin 5 mg twice a week.
Are you suggesting Nexpro for my GERD or IBS?
Does Nexpro help with IBS ?
Are there any side effects with Nexpro?
Could you please help me understand why only spicy food causes IBS ?
I checked the online and couldnt find any literature taking about IBS + spciy food.
Could you please provide suggestions on how to reduce my IBS symptoms.
Also since it occurs only with spicy food, Can I take some suplemments / medicine along with spicy food which can reduce my IBS side effects ?

Regards

Brief Answer:
Nexpro and Fibre

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The Nexpro is for the Gerd

Nexpro will help reduce the gas and acidity too.
It wont help with the stool symptoms.

There no major side effects with nexpro. There is am small chance that it can cause osteoporosis on long term 5- 10 years use.

There is definite literature which correlates spicy food with IBS in some people. Spicy food can exacerbate IBS symptoms in some people.

Follow the suggestions I've mentioned earlier
Increase fibre , take Fibre supplement like naturolax which will help with the symptoms
Avoid all spices for 6 weeks and gradually introduce one per week.

Hope this helps

Brief Answer:
fibre will help

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Fibre supplement will help with IBS D ( diarrhoea). It won't increase the symptoms.

You can take probiotics Like enterogermina as a supplement. Exercise helps in many ways like by reducing stress, exercising the muscles of abdomen helps, allay fatigue, better colon transit of digested food, etc. Drinking cleaner water should also help.

Brief Answer:
continue yakult

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Naturolax powder can be taken at night after meals.
Take 2 tsf and mix it in a glass of water and consume immediately.
Yakult is fine and there is no need to change. There is no medication which you can take with meals to prevent IBS.
Immodium 2 mg can be used for loose stools on an as required basis if number of stools are more that 4.
You might need a prescription for the same
