Question: I have Crohn's Disease and have been in a painful flare for 6 months. I have tried every drug but one which I will start this week (Humera). I am interested to know how long most people spend trying medical treatment before they opt for surgery. If I must have surgery what type of surgeon will I need?

Brief Answer:
SURGERY isn't a good option in crohn

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! It is sad to know what you had gone to go through.

Based on the history you have shared, it is still unclear what medicine have you used in past as coming to TNF blockers like adallizumab doesn't necessarily suggest last resort or depletion of of medical options as yet.

Surgery like colon resection or removing affected part has shown few grave side effects like short bowel syndrome, osmotic diarrhea or malabsorption syndromes. Also that, rate if recurrence after surgery is quote high. Normally general surgeons do such surgeries but in crohn surgical options are not advisable.

Alternate options, which are less pharmacological and have shown benefit include, use of small but frequent diets, high fibre diets, avoiding stress and moderate physical activity are all associated with greater benefits. Meanwhile keep an eye in anemia as crohn can cause blood loss as well as iron deffeicny so oral supplementation should be ensured. Discuss all these options with your gastroentrologist.

Hoping you a speedy recovery. If you dont have any more questions, please close the discussion. You can also reach me directly through my profile in future, in case of any more questions. Regards.
