Suggest Remedy For Ulcers On Side Of Tongue

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: I had ulcers (white marks)on either side of my tongue for more than 2 weeks when I went to consult a specialist (oral specialist) I have been diagnosed with mild oral lichen planus, I have taken betnosol mouthwash and applied XXXXXXX gel ( triamcinalone) four times a day for ten days. It considerably reduced but the slight white marks are still there. I have read that it can not be cured completely...what are my options available. As of now I am able to eat all kinds of food though now after reading some material on the net I am careful that I do not eat too much spicy food. I am very much concerned. I am currently taking daily medicine for hypothyroidism for past 1 year. ( thyronorm 150 mg)

Brief Answer:
Oral lichen planus responds well to treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

i have taken note of your query and i have understood it.

Lichen planus is a self limiting autoimmune disease. It may involve skin as well as oral mucosa.

Oral involvement with lichen planus commonly presents as whitish papules and lacy reticular streaks.
Less commonly there might be ulcers or erosions in oral lichen planus.
There is intolerance to spicy food in oral lichen planus.

Oral lichen planus responds well to topical as well as oral steroids.
Other treatment options in oral lichen planus include hydroxychloroquin, dapsone etc

The disease ultimately resolves with treatment though there might be some postinflammatory hyperpigmentary changes in oral mucosa.

Overall prognosis is good except in ulverative lichen planus in which there is a risk of malignancy in 1-3% of patients.

Regards
