Question: Hi

Since yesterday i had acheind pain in centre of chest on movement like if i bend over it would hurt if i washed my hands my chest would hurt. If i was sitting in normal position there was no pain but a dull ache there

Today the pain has been less but still when i move or wash my hands i get a sharp pain for a second then goes away what could it be?

Doctor has given me Naproxen.

Could this be heart related?

Brief Answer:
please see details.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir.
1. The pain in center of the chest which comes on bending or moving forward but is not present otherwise; is sharp pain in nature, is not a charateristic of anginal pain. 2. Such a pain can be due to muscle/ soft tissue /bone related pain or they may arise from the coverings of lung/ heart.
3. The pain from soft tissue , muscle or none will be worse in a particular posture and will be elicitable by local touch or pressure. They may also increase by deep breathing. There may be some swelling at local points.
4. Pain arising from covering of lung or heart will be worse in particular postures and will be sharp and will be maximum on cough. There may be some areas sensitive to touch. The patient may have cough, fever and breathlessness. There are characteristic sounds present on auscultation.
5. The category described in para 4 is relatively serious and can be diagnosed only by physical examination.
6. Both type of pain will respond to naproxen.
7. Beside there are uncommon causes of such pains including origin from gut or back bone.
I recommend you to revisit your doctor if pain persists or you have any other bothersome symptom.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder

Brief Answer:
please see details below

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir
Pain arising from heart can be of two types. 1. Anginal or heart attack related 2. Non anginal or covering of heart related which is also called pericarditis.
2. As I detailed above a muscle or soft tissue pain and pain from covering of heart / lung are both important possibilities. The characteristics are not of heart attack related pain.
3. Muscle or pain from coverings may not be clearly differentiated on history only. It requires examination.
4. A pop feeling in chest may or may not be related to cause of pain. Please see characteristics of both kind of pain in first reply.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
