Suggest Remedy For Pain And Swelling On Arm After Injury

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Jul 2015
Question: Yesterday I tripped and fell on a concrete sidewalk and to brace my fall put my arms out. My arms were immediately in pain after the shock of falling. This morning my left arm will not straighten completely and my elbow hurts a lot. I also can't bend it enough to eat with my left hand. My right elbow is also in pain but i can at least straighten it, but when i do it still hurts. there is a little swelling but not too much bruising that i can see at the moment. i am unsure if i should go to the hospital or wait because my injury just occurred. i am traveling abroad from the US for the next 3 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

Considering the type of injury you had, it is possible to have a ligament injury or a partial dislocation. The pain you are feeling and not being able to fully stretch the arm ,can be related to the injury of soft tissue (which causes bleeding and swelling ).In this case you just need to put some ice ,rest and take Ibuprofen for the pain and the symptoms will improve gradually in few days.If not ,you need to consult a physician.
Since you are going to travel,I would suggest to see a doctor first. He will examine your elbows and probably do an X-ray to exclude any possible injury on the elbow structures. It is very important to detect these injuries and get proper treatment in order to prevent long term problems.

If physical examination and X-ray are pretty much normal and there is no significant injury(partial dislocation, ligament injury) ,you may need just some rest and painkillers like Ibuprofen,Naproxen .

Hope it helps.
Please feel free to ask if you have any question.
