Suggest Remedy For Flank Pain And Bladder Sensitivity

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Aug 2015
Question: After going to the doctor with acute flank pain I was diagnosed with a kidney infection (leukocytes, nitrites, blood in dip test). Given antibiotics - trimethoprim first then changed to Nitrofurantoin after three days. Total time on antibiotics 10 days. Infection moved to bladder. Urine culture and bloods done during this time. Came up clear except for presence of anaemia. Xray of kidneys done - still waiting for result. Urine test showed yesterday that infection has apparently gone but symptoms persist, including bladder sensitivity and flank pain although not increasing - remains the same level. Did my own urine dip test at home last night which came up positive but negative this morning. Even if the dip tests are showing negative and there are no inflammation markers in the blood test, could I still have an infection?

Brief Answer:
Likely to have stone in either kidney or ureter.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query ,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have pain in flank .

Flank pain is the predominantly symptom of stone in the kidney or ureter

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem
1) Have you done Ultrasound Scanning of the abdomen and pelvis ?

Since you have been taking antibiotics since 10 days your urine culture bound to come normal as infection is being controlled .

Please consult qualified Urologist for evaluation and get Ultrasound Scanning of the abdomen and pelvis done to rule out /presence of urinary stone .

In the mean while continue taking antibiotics along with antispasmodics like Spasmo Proxyvon twice daily.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water .To keep your urine dilute This will help to control dysuria.

Further treatment will depend upon result of scanning and final diagnosis

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thank you Doctor XXXXXXX

Saw GP today - urine was positive for Leukocytes and trace blood although Doctor said this doesn't mean there is an infection (?). She sent the sample to the lab to be tested and gave me trimethoprim in the meantime. X-ray showed no stones and she did not offer an ultrasound. I suppose I wait for the results before asking for one? I can manage the pain with ibuprofen at this moment.

Brief Answer:
Radioluscent stones are not visualized in X-ray.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up.

Radioluscent stones are not visualized in X-ray ..Ultrasound Scanning will give site and size of the stone and the back pressure changes (Hydronephrosis)in kidney due to obstruction to urine flow from kidney to bladder .This is the most important investigation that decides the modality of treatment .

Please get urine culture done if not done so far .It takes three days to get the results of culture .Till then continue medicines that you are taking now along with pain killers.

Thanks and Regards.
