Suggest Remedy For Difficulty In Urination After Hip Replacement Surgery

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: two hip surgeries in 3 months roughly last one was total hip replacement after failed hip repair for fracture after fall. post 2nd surgery bladder had to be catherterized. cathater removed week later noticed penis opening was blocked, bleeding first thing each morning. seems to form some sort of scab at opening which blocks urine flow for a few moments each morning until pressure pushes urine through. Urine flow much better but there is often some urine flow deflection to the point I cant stand and hit the bowl. must sit to urinate. have appointment with treating urologist Monday morning but wondered if I should wait or not? Thanks for advice.

Brief Answer:
Epithelial injury to urethra, Infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

You are having mild damage to the urethrral epithelial lining in the penis due to the prolonged catherterisation of one week. Usually catheter should be changed ideally within 3 days. The scab is nothing but the epithelial cells and some mucous.

I recommend you drink plenty of water, about 2 litres a day. Avoid applying much pressure especially if it hurts. You can put a water tap on while you are going to urinate, and listen to the flowing water, as this will encourage passage of urine by psychological action.

If you have pain, you can take Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day for relief and inflammation which blocks the urethral opening. This problem will get cured provided you drink plenty of water to prevent an infection and also helps to flush out the blockage.

If this does not resolve in a couple of days, then you can consult your Orologist to look for any severe signs of blockage and get it evaluated and treated accordingly.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
