Suggest Dosage For Levothyroxine

Posted on Fri, 23 Oct 2015
Question: Hello, recent lab work TSH 0.187 T4, free 2.05 have been on levothyroxine .137 for approx. a year. prior to that several years at different doses adjusted to lab results. provider ordered methimazole 5 mg. I understand this is for hyperthyroidism. Concern is I am not hyperthyroid ( I believe) but just need to adjust levothyroxine? Seems a little extreme to do this for a month. Will see provider then and do labs again. Is this a normal course of action for this? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Thyroxine needs adjustment, Methimazole to bring achieve euthyroidism.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. With Thyroxine lower than lower limit of normal, its just over use of thyroxine and all you needed was some adjustment to dose intake or miss a dose or two. Usually 1.7 mcg is needed per kg of the body weight .

Now that the doctor has ordered Methimazole at lowest possible dose of 5 mg, i think that is wise too as that will bring TSH back to normal and then you may continue the thyroxine supplements at an adjustable dose. Don't worry, all this effort is to bring your hyperthyroid state back to euthyroid. After a month or two they will stop methimazole once the thyroid parameters go back in range.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.
