Should I Continue Augmentin For Cold Inspite Of Travelling?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Sep 2014
Question: Hi I had cold like symtoms for 3 days (fever, sinus pain, clogged ear etc) today fever went down but have now been coughing a lot. I am travelling and do not have access to my doctor.

I started using augmentin BD 1000mg and took 1 tablet today (splitted into 2, each 12hrs apart). Stupid of me as I now learned that once you start antibiotics you need to run the whole course. Can I simply stop since it was just one tablet? or do I have to go through this whole thing this week? How many days do you suggest I use the augmentin min if I need to continue? thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Acute sinusitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for posting the query. Do not worry! I will try to help you with this problem and confusion.

First of all, I would like to enlighten you that Augmentin 1gm is a wonderful antibiotic which has a broad coverage spectrum. So, in your case it is wiser to continue with Augmentin 1gm, as you are travelling at this point of time. The dosage is appropriate for your age and suitable for the present infection.

Secondly, antibiotic alone will not suffice in treating your problem; you need various other medicines and some home remedies.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water, this will keep the tissues hydrated and relieve the sinus blockage and the accumulated secretions.
2. Use saline nasal spray (which is available over the counter), as frequently as possible. Saline nasal spray relieves the nasal block, keeps the nose moist and the clears the accumulated secretions.
3. Do steam inhalation 3 -4 times a day, for 2 minutes. This is a wonderful procedure to make you feel better. Trust me; the clogged ears will definitely get relieved with steam inhalation.
4. Try taking a mucolytic such as ambroxol. Ambroxol lightens the secretions and clears the block.
5. OTC pain relievers such as brufen or diclofenac can reduce the headache and the facial pain.
6. If you are flying, use xylometazoline nasal spray, 1 puff in each nostril, 1 hour before the flight journey.

With these above measures you will definitely be alright. Revert back to me if you have any further queries.

thank you for detailed answers. couple of other questions please:

--Is it ok to split the augmentin 1000mg tablet and take half every 12hrs. THe recommended dosage is twice daily of the 1000mg tablet for heavy infections (mine is light) or twice daily of 625mg tablets for mild infections. mine is quite light infection but I only have the 1000mg tablets with me.

--For how many days should I take it? I am flying back on Friday so 4 days is OK or too early?

thank you

Brief Answer:
Please take 1gm, twice a day, after food...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

In the present scenario of treating infections, it would be always be wiser to start with 1gm (as per the description of the symptoms by you). When treated with inappropriate dosage, the recurrence of infections will be common.

Half of the 1gm dosage will reduce the amoxicillin quantity to 500mg and clavulanic acid to 62.5mg. Ideally, clavulanic acid should be 125mg, anything less than that will reduce the efficacy of clavulanic acid as well as that of amoxicillin. Thus, the infection is bound to recurr or develop resistance.

Take the antibiotic for at least 7 days. I can assure you, the infection will reduce very soon.

You can definitely fly on Friday, by that time you will be alright. If possible, please use xylometazoline nasal spray one hour before the flight journey, then you will not have earache.

Hope this clears your doubts. Wish you good health and good luck.
