Is Phosphorus Level Of 0.81 Mmol/L A Cause For Concern?

Question: Hi Doc

I had a full kidney, liver and a full blood count test recently all fine (Last week). Thyroid was all fine when I had it tested last year. 2014 XXXXXXX

My phosphoros levels were LOW the first time i did the test it should be 0.87mmol/L it was 0.42mmol/L

My first test result was; 0.42mmol/L

But after 11 days I improved my diet very much and was having breakfast etc, fruit and exercising well.

My levels have now gone to 0.81mmol/L this im sure is a good sign as i have improved diet and exercising.

And before my blood test I did have a glass of milk and a few Nuts would this effect the results, because obviously its showing my body is absorbing the foods I am eating i.e. Phosphorus foods such as Nuts, Milk, couscous. Can you recommend any more?s

My questions are my Doc has told me it is nothing to worry about as levels are on the rise and it is to do with the diet. Can I take this as conclusive and move on. I do not really want to get tested again as the doctor says it'll be a waste of time just improve diet.

what are your views?

They link phosphorus to a lot of things such as DNA etc so its worth asking.

Its not linked to fertility at all is it? and have i anything to worry about?

Brief Answer:
not known to affect fertility

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Since the levels are currently normal, it is not necessary to be retested once you maintain a diet that would keep the phosphorus within normal ranges.

This would include the foods that you have started to use more (nuts, milk, couscous")
Phosphorus is found in a lot of foods including seeds such as sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, cheese, salmon, tuna, mackerel, cod, shellfish, soybeans, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, pork.

Phosphorus is not thought to play a major role in human fertility. It is possible that very low levels may have an impact but this is not proven at the moment.

Zinc, folate, selenium, vitamin b12, co enzyme q, vitamin c are thought to play a role and affect fertility

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thanks

So would you say at the moment my levels are 0.81mmol/L the level which is a marker in the UK is 0.87mmol/L is this anything to worry about?

it is only 0.06mmol/L out is that big?

Obviously I will keep the diet going and take your advice on board.

0.87 is marker mine is 0.81 is this considered normal?

Would eating a lot of phosphorus foods before the test effect score?

Or does it show the body is absorbing phosphorus

Brief Answer:
value is fine

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The small difference between your value and the normal range would not have a significant impact.

The normal range can vary slightly from one lab to the next, in some places the range is 0.81 to 1.45 mmol/l. Your value would be in the normal range with these limits

Phosphorus is present in a range of foods, including foods that would be used for a general over all healthy diet eg the seeds, peas, lentils
These foods would be consumed by persons on a normal basis so maintaining a diet with these would help to keep the score within normal range and help with fiber, cholesterol, heart health (omega) as well.

Please feel free to ask anything else
