Is Laparoscopy A Painful And Risky Procedure?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Jul 2015
Question: I have been on 3-4rounds of clomid and 6-7months of trying naturally to conceive. Besides, i have thyroid that is of very initial stage n not acute and also pcod problem. My husband's reports are normal. Most of the time TVS confirms 21-22mm of dominant follicle and proper ovulation also, but still not able to conceive.Doc also did a Tuberclosis test through menstrual blood that too is negative. Now she wants to do laproscopy to check for blockage etc. I am scared now. Is laparoscopy painful and risky? Will you suggest laproscopy at this stage? I am 29yrs old and my husband is 31. Pls guide, we are confused. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Laparoscopy or HSG

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Usually if the ovulation is normal and all the other investigations of both the partners for infertility are normal, then the next step is to check the patency of both fallopian tubes. It can be done by hysterosalpingography ( HSG) or laparoscopy.
Both HSG and laparoscopy are invasive procedures, however in laparoscopy there is an added advantage to diagnose endometriosis or any other pathology in abdomen , and allows direct visualization of uterus, tubes and ovaries.
In my opinion, you can discuss with your doctor the pros and cons of HSG vs laparoscopy, and then can decide to undergo the appropriate procedure.

Brief Answer:
Yes you have to take leave

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX thanks for responding. The laparoscopy is done under general anaesthesia and hence there is no pain during the procedure. However, minimal pain is there after procedure for 1-2 days.
Yes, you need to take leave from work for at least 5-6 days post surgery.
