Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Infection by mycobacterium other than tuberculosis (MOTT)often requires multidrug therapy & administration of thrice-weekly macrolide (clarithromycin or azithromycin), ethambutol, and a rifamycin (rifampin or rifabutin)has been successful.
Therapy is prolonged, generally continuing for 12 months after culture conversion; typically, a course lasts for at least 18 months.
Other drugs with activity against MOTT include IV and aerosolized aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, and clofazimine.
Expert consultation is strongly encouraged for difficult or unusual infections due to MOTT

None of the front line antituberculous drugs including azithromycin ethambutol,rifamycin has been shown to be terratogenic and azithromycin ethambutol,rifamycin are safe in pregnancy.
However some of anti-tuberculous drugs have insufficient data documenting its safety in pregnancy.
If you think you are pregnant, continue taking your prescribed medication and consult your doctor.

Hello Doctor

underwent laproscopy for endometriosis. culture report states mott infection grown in 5th week.doctor said treatment not required for mott.
i am planning for 2nd since 3yrs plz suggest what to do.can i go for ivf with existing infection.
second opinion mgyn prescribed akt4 for 6 months

Since MOTT is proved by culture, you have to take AKT as prescribed by your gynecologist. In case you have not conceived yet, it is better to complete AKT course-then go for IVF.

is akt4 sufficient to treat mott? or any other medicine required along with akt4?
as it is mott infection not tb, for what period should akt4 be taken?
is there any specific diet while taking akt4?
it is mentioned in some online sites that liver function test has to be done before taking akt4

Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.

Ideally treatment for MOTT should be based on culture & sensitivity report (growth in 5th week as you stated). The full report would take few more weeks.

AKT-4 contains ethambutol, rifampicin ,INH and pyrazinamide.
The only drug which has to be added to this regime is azithromycin .
Please consult your gynecologist.

The total duration of treatment is 12 months.

Rifampicin & pyrazinamide are potentially hepatotoxic-hence base line liver function test like serum blilrubin,SGOT & SGPT are to be done and repeated every 02 weeks. However theses drugs are mostly well-tolerated and does not cause hepatic problems,in non-alcoholic persons.
