Brief Answer:
EMG has 2 parts- One is an NCS

Detailed Answer:
An electromyogram consists of 2 parts:

1. Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)- Can sometimes be done by itself to diagnose conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome where there are significant changes in velocity of nerve conduction which can support or negate a certain disease or illness.

2. Needle Exam- Used to gather information on the specific characteristics of the electrical signals passed from spinal cord to muscles for the purpose of diagnosing diseases. May or may not be done in conjunction with an NCS.

NCS's can be performed by a non-physician such as specially trained technician while Needle Exams can ONLY BE PERFORMED by licensed physicians.
