Is Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream The Right Medication For Lichenoid Dermatitis?

default
Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: After years of suffering with burning and itching of the vulva and opening to the vagina, I have been diagnosed with lichenoid dermatitis. Have been told to use Triamcinolone Acetonide cream for two weeks. I'm asking if this is the correct treatment; is there something I'm doing wrong to exacerbate this condition; and is it a life long thing. I'm 83 years old and previous treatment was for Herpes which now the docs say I don't have. Thanks for the input.

Brief Answer:
steroids are the treatment for lichen dermatosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to healthcare magic.

I understand your concern.

In my opinion the lichen is also called lichen planus. It is a skin disorder. It is a immunological disorder caused by exogenous allergens ,drugs like NSAIDS,antihypertensives or with unknown causes.

Steroids are the treatment of choice for it. Triamcinolone is one types of steroid. So you are under correct treatment.

Dont worry.

Lichen planus is a self limiting disease with waxing and waning episodes. Curing it really depends on the cause, if the cause is unknown, then it may not be curable.

So when there is an exacerbation (Flare-up) the steroids might be helpful. Phototherapy is also given in a few cases.

Also discuss with your doctor regarding your regular oral medication.

Hope this satisfies your query.

Feel free to discuss further.

Thank you for your input. I forgot to mention I'm on low estrogen therapy for severe hot flashes. Could the estrogen (.0375) be causing the problem? Is sugar intake a factor, do you think? I don't take any other meds, just vitamins, amino acids, and probiotics.
Thank you so much. I appreciate your time.

Brief Answer:
estrogen therapy is not associated with lichen planus

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,good day.
I got your query.
I understand your concern.
In my opinion estrogen therapy , sugar intake or the medications which you are taking are not known to be associated with lichen planus.

Antihypertensives,NSAIDS,mercury or gold agents are associated with lichen planus in some individuals.

As I explained earlier it is a self limiting disorder.

It will subside with steroid treatment.Dont worry.

Hope this satisfies your query.

Feel free to discuss further.
