Posted on Thu, 23 Apr 2015
Question: I am a 62yr old female diagnosed with osteoarthritis some 5 yrs ago I have it throughout most of my body, I,m allergic to codein and was placed on Lyrica 2 yrs ago for the pain in my hands and feet. I did not get much relief so the doctor upped the dose to 300mg daily.I stopped taking the lyrica as they did nothing for my osteoarthritis. I have been feeling extreamly depressed and suicidal and have since been prescribed antedepressants. AXIT & Auropax and Valium. I have since been told by friends that lyrica may have caused the awful dark place I feel myself in. I am concerned about taking any antedepressants. And is Lyrica any good whatsoever for osteoarthritis. I also have crohnes disese.

Brief Answer:
cymbalta, painkillers.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HealthcareMagic.
I can understand your concerns.

Lyrica, per se, is not indicated for osteoarthritis.
It also does not lead to depression.

Since your depression is severe and you have suicidal thoughts too, I think antidepressants are indicated for you.

Please let me tell you that antidepressants are mostly safe drugs. When indicated, you must take it.

In my opinion, cymbalta(duloxetine) would be the best choice for you. Its antidepressant which is also helpful in osteoarthritis.
But its a prescription drug. I think it would safe for you.

For osteoarthritis, other than this, analgesics like ibuprofen or intra articular steroids (as directed by doctor) are helpful.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask further.
Thanks.

I did not have these depressed feelings until I took myself off the Lyrica some weeks ago. I have since been informed by a chemist that ABRUPTLY STOPPING this medication can cause adverse effects to ones thoughts and well being.....
I do not wish to start any other kind of medication while there seems to be conflicting information. Thanks for your concerns.

Brief Answer:
relaxation exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Your welcome.

Abruptlu stopping any psychotropic can cause withdrawal symptoms.
The symptoms can range from mild restlessness to agitation and insomnia. But severe depression and suicidal thoughts are very rare.

If you do not wish to take any further medications, I think some relaxation exercises like deep breathing and meditation can help you to relieve stress and depression.

Axit and aropax are not appropriate for you in my opinion. Cymbalta would be the most appropriate drug in my opinion (if you wish to take drugs at anytime in future).

Hope this helps.

I wish you good health.

Thanks.
