Cymbalta

What is Cymbalta?

Duloxetine (Cymbalta, and generics) is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) created by Eli Lilly. It is mostly prescribed for major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain.

Duloxetine failed to receive US approval for stress urinary incontinence amid concerns over liver toxicity and suicidal events; however, it was approved for this indication in the UK, where it is recommended as an add-on medication in stress urinary incontinence instead of surgery.

Questions and answers on "Cymbalta"

Hi, I have been on 30mgs of cymbalta for 4 months now, for anxiety and depression. The anxiety has subsided in the mornings and at night (before and after the effects of the cymabalta, which I take at 8:00 am in the morning)
Can the cymbalta be causing my generalized, daytime anxiety/agitation and if so what can I do about it?

doctor1 MD

Hi there, thanks for asking. It is possible that the dose of cymbalta is not enough so you experience the anxiety in the hours that blood level of the medication is low. It can easily increased (and gradually) to 120 mg a day. If cymbalta causes the anxiety, it usually manifests the problem first...

I have been taking Cymbalta 120mg every morning. I was doing OK, but other factors were affecting me and I was off my medication for two weeks. I got so despressed that I could not go to my Doctor to get another Script. I have a good local doctor and my husband organised a a script. I am now much better. During my bad time I ordered from India Duzela 30, even though I tried to immediately cancel the order, it arrived today. Can I take this as a generic of Cymbalta and if so would I take 120mg - more or less.

doctor1 MD

Hi paddycraig,
Thanks for posting your query.
The one important thing in the antideppressant use is that they must never be stopped suddenly and should be tapered only when your physician plans for it.
Duzela/Cymbalta are duloxetine and they are interchangeable. So you should start the same dose...

Hi I was on 20mg of doxepin and 30mg of cymbalta. I felt short of breath and basically strange all day. Since stopping the Cymbalta I have felt much better. Do you think it may have been the combination of the 2 drugs? Or mostly the side affect of Cymbalta? I've taken doxepin on and off to sleep better over the past year. Never more than 20mg though.

doctor1 MD

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
Doxepin (sinequan) develops uneasiness , anxiety shortness in breath.
While cymbalta (duloxetin) is an antidepressant .
Due to synergism of both drug you felt such type of symptoms.
Now take single drug and doxepin is fit for you .
Good luck.

I was trying to get off Cymbalta 60mg that I was on for over a year. I took 30mg for 5 days and this past Thrusday came off it completely.. Being Im now away its from the Cymbalta and I m not having seizures or something, I took a 30mg of cymbalta because thats all I got and am going to all the doctor in the morning. Just wondering if this is ok.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

Coming off cymbalta does sometimes produce these symptoms. So, it is fairly alright for you to take one dose of 30 mg.

Symptoms usually subside in a few days, so, you need not worry.

Your doctor would be able to advise you regarding the tapering schedule, in...

I have been prescribed and taking Cymbalta for depression for 15 months. Good improvement. Recently, after finding a new physician, and blood work came in, my LDL levels were high--141-was the latest. And I understand there may be a link between these two. Can you provide some guidance? Of course I will return to my M.D. with the same questions--and he is aware that I am currently taking the Cymbalta. Thanks

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

There is some medical evidence that SSRI , which is the family of drugs that cymbalta belongs to, can raise cholesterol in some persons.

The only way to determine if it is having an effect would be to discontinue the cymbalta but this would then have affect...

Hi
I use Cymbalta 60, as well as Crestor, a cholesterol pill. I already bought a packet of Duromine, but reading the comments on the anti-depressant combined with Duromine makes me really worried! Should I stop using the Cymbalta while I take the Duromine, or will it still be effective if I take the Duromine only every second day?

doctor1 MD

Hello
Welcome to HCM

Cymbalta is duloxetine and is a SNRI drug. It has potential to cause increase in blood pressure. Duromine is a stimulant drug and it also causes increase in blood pressure. So if you will take both drugs simultaneously there is a risk of serious increase in BP. I would advise...

I recently moved to New Mexico from California and have not been able to reach my physician in California to obtain a refill Rx for Cymbalta. Both my pharmacy and I have left him numerous messages. I have not been able to establish myself with a physician here yet due to snafu s related to insurance, but I do have an appointment scheduled for April. The problem is, I am going through major Cymbalta withdrawl and can t get a prescription! I have taken this medication for many years. My medical group does have an urgent care clinic , but I was already told by phone that they would NOT give me a Rx for Cymbalta as that must be ordered by whatever doctor I establish myself with, but again, that is not until April. What about continuity of care issues? What the heck can I do? Any ideas?

doctor1 MD

Hi, Welcome to Healthcare Magic, "Cymbalta" is a "S" category medicine in most countries of the world, i.e. it can only be sold by a real Pharmacist upon production
of Really real Prescription and the ins and out have to be submitted to FDA on daily basis, hence until you have proper prescription no...

My husband has been taking Cymbalta 30 mg for about a month now and was doing pretty good with it. But now is not agreeing with him. Should he ask for a lesser dose than that or go back to taking Celexa (Citalopram) that he was taking prior to this and if so, can he just stop taking the Cymbalta and start taking the Citalopram again. He is feeling very tired, sometimes like he might pass out, difficulty swallowing, etc. etc. - all of the terrible side effects at once.

doctor1 MD

Greetings !

Well he can substitute Cymbalta with celexa but not immediately as stopping Cymbalta abruptly may bring in withdrawal symptoms thereby worsening his condition even more so better will be to taper down the dose of Cymbalta to 20 mg / day and continue this for 1 week and then replace...

I have been getting sores inside my nose, first one side then the other, and also both sides at the same time. This seems to have been happening since I was on Cymbalta and a Fentanyl patch for about 6 months for disc problem. I remember the information papers with the Cymbalta indicated if you have a peeling sore or anything around the mouth that you should notify the MD. Since the sores were inside the nose I did not indicate this to the MD. I'm wondering if this could be related to the Cymbalta. I have been off the Cymbalta and Fentanyl for about 6 to 8 months.

doctor1 MD

Hi,

All medicines including can cause rashes and sores but this happens when there is an allergic reaction to the drug. Since allergic reactions are not likely to persist for months after stopping the drug, I do not think your nasal sores are due to either Cymbalta or fentanyl. There are many...

Cymbalta discontinuation syndrome- I weaned off 120 mg or 60 mg 2x a day under Drs orders. Began having profuse sweating then shiver shudders. Next sx was tip of tongue/ word recall issues. I am being treated for RSD and we discussed a different drug as SE of Cymbalta were too much. Now I have pain shooting up fingers and walking on feet hurts. Is there not a safer way to come off this. What happens if I stop the next 60mg as I did after only my 2nd week. Can I get so ill Ill die or need to be hospitalized? The wd is horrible. I thought it was menopause but the sweating I have been having for 2 years is now exponentially compounded along with new things.

I had rotator cuff surgery on 01/30/14. Since then I have been so exhausted. Everything seems such an effort. Sometimes I can hardly keep my eyes open. I also have swelling in my hands and legs below the knees. I take furosomide but it doesn t help much. At first it did but not any longer. I also have type II diabetes. My neck is hurting all the time. I am 66 years old and also very overweight which I am working on. I have lost 17 pounds since Christmas. Kind of goes up and down but net loss is 17. Some of this has gotten worse since the surgery. Actually, my shoulder is doing quite well and have been going to physical therapy as scheduled and doing what I am required to do. I quit eating bread about two months ago and the body pain that I had from supposedly fibromyalgia ( spelling) is so much better. I stopped taking cymbalta and nabunetone (spelling?) So some things are better and some are now worse. I was checked out thoroughly for heart problems before surgery and I am fine. They did stress test and echo and all was ok. Can you give me some direction as to what might be going on?
