Is Aptima HIV-1 RNA Qualitative Assay Done 11 Days After Exposure Conclusive?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Jul 2016
Question:

My results were negative thank God
I took an Aptima HIV qualitive assay (Gen probe) RNA test they said is 95-99 percent accurate 9-11 days post exposure
I mis counted days and did it on the 9th day but
My possible exposure was on 6/14 at 5 pm
My test was 6/23 at 10 am
So I may not have allowed the full 9th day to evolve
In other words I may have tested short of the suggested window
I am a nervous wreck and wonder how reliable was the test considering I shortened the window by 8 hours or so?

Brief Answer:
Reliable enough

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
You don't have to be worried. This period won't have effect on test reliability and this is still around 99%. Wish you good health. Regards

I hate to bother you with same question rephrased but I am a nervous wreck and felt so relieved to see my silly escapade wasn't tied to a death sentence 2 minutes of oral sex and then spent days crying
When I found out it was negative no hiv detected i was so relieved until I recounted the day XXXXXXX
I know the std test company said 9-11 days I thought I was at 9 and was really at 8.5 days
Do you think the scientists had a buffer in there
I am trying to compute the odds because wife is pregnant and asking me why I am not in the mood I been ignoring her but I am so darn scared also I read the thing and it said this test is for hiv 1 I didn't know there were 2 types apparantly the test I did only tests for 1 type not the other
So that has me scared again I just want to go back to normal life no worries and have a peaceful nights sleep

Brief Answer:
Hi

Detailed Answer:
I understand your worries but trust there is no need to be concerned. First, if this was oral sex then even if your partner was hiv positive, the risk of transmission is very small, around 1/10000. if we furthermore consider that test was negative, then chances for infection are negligible. These 9 days are not scientifically determined. Such test will show reliable result even after 3-4 days. This period is prolonged in instructions because of people who suffer from immunocompromisef conditions and those with low white blood count. in these people,it may be few more days required for production of antibodies. So in healthy people,99% accuracy is achieved even after 5 days. This test would detect any type of HIV.

Brief Answer:
Hi

Detailed Answer:
Yes you are right. This test detect viral RNA so it is much faster and more accurate then serologic tests. In normal people viral RNA multiplies to detectable value already few days so this can be diagnosed with this test. 9 days is recommended because in very small number of people, rna production may be delayed.
