How To Reduce Uric Acid Level?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Dec 2014
Question: I have taken hyzaar for several years. A year ago I developed gout and my doctor prescribed allopurinol to reduce the uric acid in my system. Yet one of side affects of the diuretic in hyzaar is the production of uric acid. Wouldn't it have been better to change my blood pressure medication than prescribe another medication to relieve the side affects?

Brief Answer:
Yes, you are right.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
You are absolutely right. Many diuretics increases the Uric acid levels.
Infact, I personally don't advise my patients with raised uric acid to take diuretic for high BP.
You can definitely discuss with your doctor to put you on other class of Anti Hypertensive drugs like Beta Blockers , calcium channel blockers which won't affect your Uric acid.
Also I would advise you to get your Kidney Function tests done, to rule out any Kidney involvement due to Hypertension, that might be the culprit for raising your Uric Acid.
I hope the information helps you.
If you have any further query please ask me.
