How Should Vaginal Discharge Varying From Yellow To Blood Red Be Handled After A Partial Hysterectomy For Ovaries And Polyp Removal?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Feb 2021
Question: I started having a vaginal discharge in January. I waited a week and then went to a gynocologist and had ultrasounds done showing a cyst on my right ovary and a polyp in the uterus. She also did blood tests, one a ca-125. She scheduled me for a hysteroscopy to remove the polyp. She called the day before my scheduled procedure and said she was referring me to XXXXXXX Mayo because the test for cancer was elevated. I had a partial hysterectomy (removal of ovaries and removal of the polyp). The discharge is worse, exam shows no infection. I was put on estradiol cream. I can see no improvement . The discharge varies from greenish yellow to blood red. This is not pleasant for an 82 year old to handle. Is there any thing that can change this???

Brief Answer:
Can be related to vaginal dryness.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

The discharge that you are having is likely to be a reactive discharge or due to vaginal dryness as the infection has been ruled out. The estradiol cream that you are using is likely to help in reducing the discharge but it takes 2-3 weeks to show a complete effect.

In case you are having medications like aspirin or painkillers better to reduce them in order to reduce the blood-red staining of the discharge.

I'd suggest getting a culture sensitivity test of the discharge done to further rule out the infection.

I hope this answers your query.

You are just saying the same old thing. I have been on this cream for over five weeks and there is no improvement. I was hoping you would have other solutions. This discharge is driving me crazy. I have to wear a pad all of the time and don't know when the discharge is going to be heavy.

Brief Answer:
Fistula or infection needs to be ruled out.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If you have been using the cream for more than 5 weeks then it may not be related to dryness. A culture of the fluid can help in ruling out an infection. You also need to consult a urologist to rule out any fistula.
Hope my answer is helpful.

How do you check for a fistula and what are symptoms? The last test of the discharge was done 4/24/18 and nothing has changed since then, no burning, smell or discomfort.

Brief Answer:
Can be ruled out after physical examination.

Detailed Answer:
In case of fistula, there is a continuous or intermittent dribbling of urine through the vaginal opening. The diagnosis is done by physical examination and by placing swabs at different positions in vagina. Your urologist can help you regarding this.

I see no signs of urine, just the discharge. There is no odor or discomfort. Is it typical for women my age to have a discharge? What do women like myself do about it?

Brief Answer:
Can be a reactive discharge.

Detailed Answer:
In case it is not urine then it is a sterile reactive discharge that should reduce gradually with time. Vaginal vault discharge can be there after a hysterectomy.
