Posted on Wed, 19 Aug 2015
Question: I took an Adderall for the first time and that very night when it left my system I developed chills, fever and a really bad sore throat. I haven't been able to eat or drink. It's been 5 days and it hasn't gotten any better. What can I do? I've tried antibiotics, gargling with warn salt water, and taken aleive. How long will this last?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com
This is Dr. Swarnava dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Adderall can have some serious side effects in normal dose as well as overdose but sore throat with chills and fever are not very common. However, you have been treating it with antibiotics and antihistamines. If such a patient comes to me, I would have advised coamoxyclav or azithromycin as antibiotics as they tend to act very well in upper respiratory tract infections. Steam inhalation and salt water gargling with avoidance of cold and chilled food or drinks would be my advice too. Antihistamines can be taken if there is too much running nose or sneezing. For fever, paracetamols or NSAIDs can be taken.
It has been 5 days since your problem. I would suggest antibiotic coverage for another 3-5 days. It should get better by then. You can consult your family or treating doctor about the above and get these prescribed.

Hope i have answered your question.
If you have any further questions i will be happy to help.
Regards

there is also a little blood in my mucus. Should I be worried or is that just because of my throat being irritated?

Brief Answer:
It is not uncommon; follow as advised

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Blood mixed mucous can be present in throat infection. It is due to continuous irritation of the mucosa of throat and hence bleeding occurs.
No need to worry as of now.
Have enough water and fluid per oral.
Continue antibiotics and other medications for 5 days. If it does not get better, get a throat swab done for culture and sensitivity and consult an ENT specialist.

Regards.
