Brief Answer:
Ayurvedic medicines not researched for side effects

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting with your health concern and I do remember the consultation given in the month of Aug’2014 and regarding your present problem do let me know about the following:

1.Is disturbed sleep due to some anxiety/depression/panic attack? [any STRESS]
2. Does the sleep disturbance affecting your work/social/family life? [health issues]
3. Any excess intake of caffeine/sugar?
4. Conditions which are more or less associated with sleep problem is/are: kidney disease, heartburn, mental health problem [all are present] thus these could be independent or interrelated with each other, so an exclusive health checkup is mandatory.

PS. check with your hemoglobin, thyroid, lipid profile [any other deemed necessary by the attending physician]
5. Do revert back with your clarification, till then preventive aspect is given:

a. avoid caffeine found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cola, and some pain relievers
PS. [four to six hours before bedtime]. Chamomile tea is caffeine free and age old remedy for insomnia, while valerian root is a good anti stress root available in tea or drop
b. quiet, dark, and cool environment can help promote sound sleep.
PS. [Use heavy curtains, or an eye mask to block light, and also keeping computers, TVs, and other work materials out of the room will help promote mental bonding between your bedroom and sleep]
c. Avoid stressful, stimulating activities like doing work, discussing emotional issues.
PS. Physically and psychologically stressful activities can cause the body to secrete the stress hormone cortisol, which is associated with increasing alertness.
d. take dinner 2-3 hours before bedtime and avoid foods that cause indigestion. [spicy-heavy- junk food]
e. avoid afternoon napping to prevent late night awakening [ between 2-3 pm is ideal, but that too sitting on a chair while head resting on table]
f. looking at clock in your bedroom, [when you are trying to fall asleep] can actually increase stress, making it harder to fall asleep. Turn your clock’s face away from you.
g. Principle is to have well balanced diet with more of proteins and more Calories with exercise, take more of cereals, legumes, daal, egg,and eat fresh fruits regularly with sweet pulp like (banana, XXXXXXX chickoos, grapes)
h. take banana, black grapes, orange, spinach, ginger, tomatoes, curd, take diet rich in vitamin C (Citrus fruits) and vitamin E (sunflower seeds, almonds, apricots, peanuts) which are rich in anti oxidants
i. Lemon juice mixed with sugar in a glass of water helps release stress removing hormones from the body and bring mind at peace/rest.
j. Mix 4-5 dates in half glass of water and drink 2 times daily for a month.
k. make a paste of 'bhang' with cow/goat milk and massage on feet.
. take a glass of XXXXXXX milk at bed time [best sleep inducer].
. I usually prescribe ‘phyt stress’ and ‘well heart’ medicine(s) to my patients with the same problem with effective and good results. If interested I can courier you the medicine.
l. Regarding your heart burn problem:
Take: old brown rice, bitter gourd, white gourd melon, green vegetables, cold water, pipalli, harad, garlic, honey, amla, rice water gruel, barley water, milk, shatavari.

Avoid: newly harvested rice,chick pea flour,black gram,horse gram, potato, brinjal, saindhav namak, kanji,spicy food,tea/coffee,alcohol,junk food,day time sleeping, tomato,white sesame seed,curd,pain killers [NSAID's],

3. HOME REMEDIES [of your choice]

. Drink 4 spoons of aegle marmelos leaves juice for 14 days.
. try to suck a piece of clove for immediate relief.
. fresh mint juice
. banana, cucumber, water melon are natural antacids
. glass of warm water [early morning]
. coconut water [3-4 times a day]
. suck 10 gm jaggery everyday [after meals] if there is constant acidity.
. Mix
3 pinch dry ginger powder
3 pinch amla powder
3 pinch sugar and eat this mixture for 1 month

4. LIFESTYLE

. Avoid forward bending or Immediately lying down after eating, [cause of bitterness in mouth/and persistent dry cough], instead go for head high position at night [since GERD causes regurgitation/choking]
. loose excess weight
. maintain good posture. [gravity prevents reflux]
. do not eat one large meal at one time, instead take smaller, more frequent meals during the day. [seek an opinion of Gastroenterologist] if necessary
. If interested in medicine(s) for the same do let me know

Thanks Doctor for your advice. However on most of the Ayurvedic medicines they mention that there are no side effects. I had a few disturbing situations earlier which had caused the disturbed sleep pattern. Now I have more or less overcome it. Some days I find it difficult to fall asleep. But compared to earlier I am better.

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back

1. As you have succeeded in overcoming the situation/issues in life, thus maintain a 'VATA' pacifying Dietary Regime and lifestyle:

i. Avoid caffeine [as mentioned earlier] after lunch time
ii. Abhyanga [foot message] with anti vata oil [sesame/bala XXXXXXX ksheerbala] relaxes the body and head massage with brahmi oil is effective for insomnia
iii. a warm bath before bed time is also beneficial
iv. avoid attention seeking activities [at night], i.e. watching thriller/horror/ suspense movies/serials
v. As you also have kidney stones/hypertension/acidity problem thus it could be pitta related sleep imbalance [but still check with a qualified physician]
vi. Do consider for 'Phyt STRESS' medicine as it has very good results in insomnia related disorder.
