Question: I started the ideal protein diet and I am constipated, does whey and soy products increase chance of constipation?

Congratulations for deciding to lose excess weight, a tough journey, but very rewarding! Let us first talk about constipation.

Many times when we change our diets for the good, we increase our fiber. If fiber is increased to quickly and/or without enough fluids, constipation will develop. So, if this is you, take fiber up slowly to avoid gas and constipation.

With fluids, try to dring 8 -10 eight ounce glasses of water per day and avoid sodium by reading labels keeping it under 2300 mg and no added salt at table.

To get things going you can drink a bottle of magnesium citrate and once things get going, try to set a bowel program and schedule up. Some individuals find that a daily dose of 17 gms of polyethylene glycol will take care of chronic constipation.

Using diet is the best method. Fresh fruits (kiwi helps one lose weight according to the most recent literature-it is a superfruit), prunes definitinely are natural laxatives. Exercise - the more movement, the more the gut is stimulated.

Try to evacuate at the same time each day on a schedule. Our body's like schedules.

Take both pre- and probiotics to re-regulate your system.

I noticed you were on lactulose. Lactulose increase ammonia level so it might not be the best prescription for you. If you need to be on something daily try the polyethylete glycol. Bathe in magnesium salts. For a good cleanse drink the cherry or lemonade flavored magnesium citrate drink.

Thank you Doctor for the constipation advise, I am well versed on what to do, as I have lived with this issue since childhood. however I was wondering specifically, is whey and soy protein that is used in the ideal protein diet might be potentially causing issues? I have only just started the diet this is day seven.

I guess I got to going along and forgot to tell you there was no problem with the soy and whey. I am so sorry about that. I have not heard of whey and soy protein causing my clients constipation and did look it up to verify.

I also looked up the diet you are on and that is more likely the cause of your constipation. If it is the one I read about, you eat pre-ackaged meals and limit your calories to 900? And, you aren't allowed to exercise? If this is the diet then this is the reason for getting plugged up.

Good luck and now I have answered the soy/whey specifically and apologize so much for not clarifying in my initial response.
