Does Intake Of Benadryl Help In Curing Rhinorrhoea?

Posted on Fri, 4 Mar 2016
Question: Last week I had a cold, took amoxicillin because I had a cold last summer and it turned into the case of sinus trouble. Now I am over everything except blowing thick mucus and now it has turned into my nose constantly running. I took a Benadryl 2 hours ago, but it did not help.

Brief Answer:
amoxicillin will not help

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Colds are caused by viruses and antibiotics like amoxicillin only treat bacterial infections so the amoxicillin will not help with the runny nose. Benadryl may help to some extent in some people but not in everyone. You can try nasal saline and there are prescription medications for runny nose like Atrovent nasal spray that can help. Time will get rid of the runny nose. Viruses just have to run their course. Of course if you develop any worsening symptoms like fever, severe cough, coughing up blood or shortness of breath you should see a doctor right away. Occasionally a cold virus can lead to something worse like pneumonia or a sinus infection
I hope you are feeling better soon
