What causes nose sensitivity and how to reduce it?
I am having difficulty with nose sensitivity and a cilantro-like smell stuck in my nose. I visited my GP and have subsequently been using a neti pot, nasal spray and anti-acid pills (pump supressor type). There has been some improvement but it lingers around all the time. It seems to be worse in the evening. My husband has a bowel restriction and has to use stool softeners. When he passes gas in the evening the smell makes me nauseous and gets stuck in my nose. I have to sleep in a separate room. I am a 64 year old woman and this is making my life miserable. Is this an allergic reaction to something?
Difficulty in nose sensitivity, feeling cilantro like smell stuck in nose, nausea with certain smell can be due to intra-nasal pathology like infection, allergic polyposis making changes in nerve sensitivity and thus the altered sensation. I would advise you the following in such a situation: Stop Neti and all such procedures as there is no role and in fact can cause more harm.
Consult an ENT Surgeon, get nasal endoscopy, CT scan of sinuses to see for sinusitis and relevant tests of blood like CBC, for any liver, kidney diseases and to rule out diabetes. This will lead to an appropriate diagnosis and thus can have specific treatment with antibiotics, steroids if needed and surgery in indicated cases.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
