Does Metaformin Cause Knee Pain?
Question: I am a open heart patient and recently about three years ago the artery supplying blood to the right ascending colon plugged and 6 foot of gut died and became gangrenous. I have artherosclerosis and the last go around the by-pass grafts had started to plug up and they inserted two stents in the area of the upper right shoulder area. My doctor keeps telling me that he wants my blood sugar lower than seven which is normal, because I am a heart patient. He has me on 5x500mg metaformin per day and I am now getting such a pain in my right knee, and it can hardly take my weight any more. For my heart I take 1x81mgm Asa baby aspirin. 2x Rabeprazole 10mg. 6x100mg Gabapentin 1x40mg Lovastatin. 1x 180mg Diltiazem. 2x80mg Sotalol. 2x25mg Amitriptyline. 1x200Mg Fenofibrate 1x5mg Finasteride. I think this metaformin is just making my life pretty awful I am 77 years of age.
Brief answer....metformin can not be the reason for your pain in knee
Detailed answer....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
The most prominent and common side effects of metformin ate primarily astrointestinal in nature.
You can get nausea, vomiting, pain abdomen, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, metallic taste in mouth with use of metformin.Pain in knee joint has nothing to do with consumption of metformin.
The causes for pain in knee can be various and needs to be explored by getting X-ray and CT of knee joint done.
Talk to you doctor and get your knee examined. At your age osteoarthritis of the knee joint is the most common cause for knee pain.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
