Does Cetrizine Cause Round Red Rashes On Body?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: Was having itchy feeling in the palms and swollen parts in hands shoulders and legs for five days and pain in the finger tips.
After taking avil for few days it was recommended by a doctor in the portal to take cetrizine after which itchiness has decreased but there is red coloured circles all round the body. I'm having a bit of fever also now.
I'm leaving for my hometown this friday and will undergo a full health checkup.
Is Cetrizine in anyway causing any reactions as I have to undergo a five day course as suggested by the doc in this portal.

Kindly provide the details

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome and thanks for posing your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the itchy feeling in the palms and swollen parts in hands shoulders and legs for five days along with rest of mild fever problem.

The part of history is though helpful but not conclusive enough to guide you to best suggestions and possibilities. As per the details provided it appears to be "Urticaria".

I request you to provide some details so that I can help you best in your condition:

- Had there been presence of any red patches on skin. IF any changes in skin then can send some pictures( photos).

- Any reduction or aggravation or complete disappearance of itching by self or is persistent throughout and only can be managed by avil or cetrizine.

- Severity of itching - mild/ moderate/ severe/ very severe.

- Any recent change in life style or any change in place or daily routine.

For the part of cetrizine - it is mainstay of drug in urticaria and itching problems and therefore probably been prescribed to you by your doctor. SO do not correlate cetrizine with your present health problems. Cetrizine is actually helping you out in our condition.

Hope to hear soon form you so that I can guide you further.

Brief Answer:
Urticaria; identify allergen and Antihistamine

Detailed Answer:
Hello young man,

Welcome again to the forum and thanks for your follow up as well as adding all the important informations.

After analyzing the complete situation along with pictures I can make out that you have the problem known as “Urticaria”.

To tell you simply about it- Our blood contains multiple type cells including red blood cells and white blood cells. Specifically these white blood cells provide immunity to our body which are of further multiple types.

Whenever anything in body is not suitable or offending to body then the number of white blood cells increases transiently. Particularly these cells which increase are eosinophils and basophils which are also known as mast cells.

These cells contain granules which have a specific chemical known as histamine. So as soon as any offending factors come in contact there is bursting of the mast cells. There fore this histamine is released and we experience variable degree of itching and the kind of redness and swelling which we can see in yourself or simply itching also. This can remain for a very transient period to upto multiple hours. It can remain for more than 12 hours too depending on the intensity of the offending factor. In simple words it is the over expression of immunity in ourselves to protect form the allergens and offending factors.

Now the type of offending factor are innumerable including our food, environmental factors including temperature variation, heat, humidity, cold, dust and even simple of fragrances in air and multiple of other related things.

In your case it may be related to environmental factors or any contact allergens or food or change of environment according to change of place and even due to "danders" in cat also.

You check out for any change in all the factors during preceding last two hours before the itching and rash. For the treatment part - it is quite simple and treated with drugs which inhibits the histamine release also known as Antihistamines.

The treatment provided to you in form of cetrizine is good but I myself prefer Loratadine ( Dazit or Alaspan or Lorfast) in my patients as it is very simple medicine without any side effects of sedation. Cetrzine is though good tablet but sometime it causes mild sedation. That is why I prefer to give loratadine. In my patients I start with 2 tablets/day, as soon as good effect is maintained then reduce to one in next weeks and then alternate days in next few days. Once there are no lesions/bumps for few weeks then taper off to 2-3 tablets per week and then stop it.

In general urticaria may remain for few weeks to months. In most of the cases as our immune system and body get adjusted to that particular offending factor so it then self subsides.

I hope these information will help you in dealing the condition better.

If you have any further queries I will be glad to help you.

With good health wishes,

Regards,
