Can Unprotected Oral Sex Cause Transmission Of HIV?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, I had unprotected one time oral sex receiving end with a female of unknown status. She did XXXXXXX me in the process and brought blood towArds the end. Did an oraquick swab test one week later. Results were neg. Which I was pretty sure that not enough time had elapsed so I did a DNA pcr at 68 days post exposure, resulting negative. What are the chances of another oraquick swab test showing positive? Thank you in advance for your opinion!

Brief Answer:
Very low risk, less than 1 in 10000 sexual acts

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Unfortunately you have had unprotected oral sex and there was bleeding towards the end. However since you have tested in the negative even after 68 days post probable exposure, chances are less that you are infected.

The exact risk for transmission of HIV through receptive oral sex (female to male) is less than 1 in 10000 sexual acts. This is a very low figure.

You might get another test at the end of 6 months for peace of mind.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Thank you so much Dr. Chail! I have been going through so much physical and emotional stress over this! Almost 24/7! Not to mention trying to keep my marriage together! I really needed some sound advice! I have had some symptoms like weight loss, insomnia , headaches which were not very intense, fatigue which could be caused from the insomnia and emotional stress! I do have a burning sensation in my mouth which started about a week ago. Just wondering if it could be related to either one, stress or the other.once again Dr, thanks you so much! You don't know how much stress this takes off my mind! !!

Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Please get the baggage out of your mind and be alert next time around if you receive sex from unknown women.

Going by medical knowledge you are least likely to be having the disease. You may take steps to keep your marriage intact by meeting a counselor if necessary.

Hi Dr, just wanted to let you know, I took an oraquick swab last night. Results were negative. And your right, I should have known better than to do something like this and believe me, it won't happen again! I do have one more question, would having copd have a detrimental effect on the results of these tests? I do have a upper plate denture and I took it out when I took the test. Thanks again for your advice!

Almost forgot, I'm not sure even if I have copd but my gp said I did but hasn't done any x-rays.

Brief Answer:
COPD does not affect HIV testing

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Glad that you tested negative again.
COPD does not have any effect on the test results.

It must be diagnosed by doing lung function tests, X ray chest or CT scan chest, arterial blood gases.

Hello again, I have another question or two, I have a past history of hepatitis A when i was 12.no known cancers of any kind and I wanted to know if either one of them would have an effect on my results I posted earlier. Thanks again

Oops I meant to post this on the previous post, the test on the lab results said HIV 1/0/2Abs but the lady said it was a DNA pcr sequence so I really don't know.could I be having late seeroconversion? I know it sounds like I'm grabbing at straws here on negative results but I really need to know if I can trust these results. Thanks again!

Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

If you had hepatitis A at age 12 years then there is no need to worry about any errors in testing due to that. This is a self limiting infection you were cured many years ago. It does not stay in your system.

Test report mentioning HIV 1/0/2Abs refers to ELISA test. If your HIV antibody result (HIV 1/0/2 abs qual) is below the "index value" you can be confident it is negative.

Thanks so much Dr Vivek! I wished that I could send you my lab work so you could see for yourself but here's how it reads, Index value: specimen reactivity relative to the negative cutoff. Non-reactive index value <1.00. On the liver panel, ast was flagged low at 10 and alt flagged at 19.Rbc 5.43 h ,HGB 17.4 H,MCH 32.0 H. All other stuff is normal. Could any of these readings be indicative that the hiv test was done to soon? And could the readings on the liver panel be a sign of another problem? Thanks again so much!

Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing back with an update.

There is no effect of blood test on HIV testing. You have a higher concentration of hemoglobin.
The red blood cell count is also raised. This is usually found in people settled in high altitudes.
No other problem from liver tests and your HIV test is also normal.

Hope your query is answered.
