Can Oral Sex Cause HIV?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: Hi,
I had sex on 15th October that involved protected anal sex, however unprotected oral sex (received and gave a blowjob and rimming). 2 days later i had a sore throat, on 19th octber i went for an hiv test and normal blood test. The antigen antibody 4th generation test result was negative however i knew later that the window period is not enough at all. Few days later i developed white fury layer on my tongue and swollen lymph nodes on my neck that still remain till today. My neutrophils at the time were 82% (high) and lymphocytes at 11% (low) however a month before sex i was on amoxicillin for throat infection too. Im really worried and in anxiety of what i might have. I really seek advice.

Brief Answer:
Oral sex carries a low risk as per CDC XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
HI,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for psoting your query.
You had protected anal sex. Oral sex carries a low risk for HIV. With rimming the risk is negligible.
Regarding your 4th generation HIV test, done 4 days after the exposure, has of no value as for as the reliability is concerned. You can go for 4th generation test or HIV PCR (DNA or RNA Qualitative) 4 weeks after the risky contact and rule out HIV 1 Infection (99% common), and another antibody based test 12 weeks after to rule out HIV 2 infection which is a very rare possibility.
Sore throat and fever are very common symptoms those every one of us would come across at any point of time.
Nothing to get anxious. you would likely be to get a non reactive test.

Thank you for your prompt reply dr.

However is the oral thrush (white layer on tongue) normal too? And could these be a sign of oral gonorrhea?

Brief Answer:
Gonorrhea not involve the tongue

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Oral gonorrhea usually affects pharynx and not the tongue. Oral thrush is often a presumption and has to be confirmed by a physician. Seek the help of your physician.
