Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: Hello doctor I would like to ask your opinion on hypothyroidism and testing T3 levels. I have hypothyroidism as a result of hashimotos and am on 50mcg of thyroxine and is monitored by GP.
I have been suffering with pain in my legs for a fair while now and although. I have arthritis in my hips I am not certain this is totally responsible. I am of the understanding that a low level of T3 level of the thyroid can also cause these muscular symptom. What are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely

Detailed Answer:
The body converts as much T4 to T3 as it needs in the cells. So all thyroid guidelines by authoritative entities have repeatedly reinforced this message that thyroxine alone suffices for the treatment of hypothyroidism.

As long as the Free T4 and TSH are in target range then there is no need to use T3 for the treatment of hypothyroidism.

T3 (Liothyronine) although available in some countries is not recommended for use to treat this common condition called hypothyroidism.

Furthermore, the free T3 blood test is not very accurate and can be unreliable at times.
