Can Gonorrhea Be Contracted Through Protected Vaginal Sex?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: I met this 19 year old girl at a bar in Tbilisi, XXXXXXX I made sure she was of legal age. We had sex many times over the course of a few days. I noticed she would discharge a lot, i thought this was because she was young. Anyway I always used a condom. She, however, gave me blowjob a couple of times and I discharged in her mouth.

a month later she informed me on email that she has Gonorrhea for the past 6 months. She has not gotten tested as it is expensive and carries shame. She says has lots of discharge, brown blood. She has had no blood test or gone to a doctor. She is convinced it is Gonorrhea. She told me she has had 5 partners in the past year of which 2 she has had unprotected sex with. Its been almost 30 days since I had sex with her. I have not faced any problems.

I just have itchy eyes , no redness. Have I gotten the STD as well? I am sexually very active. I have had unprotected Oral sex /rimming from many women/sex workers.

My situation.

+Sore throat - No.
+Burning sensation while urinating - Nothing out of the ordinary
+Abdominal pain- None , but headaches
+Frequent urination - i drink a lot of water, so nothing out of ordinary.
+Discharge from the penis - Nothing I have noticed.
+Pain during intercourse - None.
and a few others.

Brief Answer:
Gonorrhea is unlikely; must test for genital herpes, syphilis at 4 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

Protected vaginal sex guards against gonorrhea, chlamydia as well as Hiv.
Pharyngeal gonorrhea, though rare, can transmit during unprotected receptive oral sex provided she had throat gonorrhea at that time..
Considering the fact that you do not have any symptoms like urethral discharge or burning I assume you are safe as far as gonorrhea is concerned.

However, protected sex is not 100% protective against all STD's like genital herpes, Hpv, Syphilis etc. This is because a condom covers only a portion of shaft of penis. It does not cover base of shaft, pubic akin and base of scrotum which are exposed to direct skin to skin contact as well as contact with genital secretions of partner. Therefore you must get tested for Hsv, Syphilis at 4 weeks and then again at 12 weeks for a conclusive result.

I am married. Can I have protected sex with my wife? Or not? Can I sleep in the same room as my baby? Can i kiss my child? Any precautions to take around my family?

I am on antibiotic which i mentioned to you.

Please also advise the std tests to take?
Plus any other precautionary medication I can take meanwhile. I can take any antibiotic or medication you deem fit.

Brief Answer:
STD testing for Hsv and syphilis at 4 weeks and again at 12 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I suggest you to first test for STD's like herpes and syphilis before you can indulge in having sex with your wife. I suggest ELISA for type 1 and 2 Hsv (IgG and IgM) and RPR for syphilis initially at 4 weeks and to be repeated at 12 weeks for a conclusive result. I would also suggest you to test for Hiv (just for completion) even though protected sex adequately guards against Hiv. Testing for Hiv should be taken at 4 weeks with an HIV DUO test (Hiv antibody and P 24 antigen test)
If these tests are negative you can safely resume sex with your wife.
There is no problem in sleeping in the same room or kissing your child. No other specific precautions.

Regards
