Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: Hello MD,

I had protected oral and vaginal with a CSW. I have no memories or concerns about a condoms breakage or slippery. My only issue is that I have some ARS symptoms (What I think is ARS): Fatigue, white tongue, blister on palate, kind of irritation on penis. ( I am not going to lie I am very stress also). They all started around 20 days after exposure.

at 28 days, while I was abroad : HIV 1/2 Agp24/ab combo sur Acsess 2, Beckmann-Coutier - negative
at 48 days, with my MD: REVEAL RAPID HIV - 1 NEG and HIV -2 AB screen by Elisa also NEG. Plus HIV -1 RNA PCR UNDETECTABLE.
My MD promised me that I am not infected! I do not know why I cannot believe him I need another opinion.
Do you think that these test are conclusive or I should go test over 3 months?
Can a PCR RNA with an antibodie rule out HIV infection past 6 weeks?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
HIV testing should be done after 3 months

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM.

You are concerned about possible infection with HIV after exposure to a CSW. The HIV virus is transmitted during unprotected intercourse from someone infected. The virus usually starts growing within 2-4 weeks and antibodies are detectable within 1-3 months. In my practice I have patients repeat blood tests for HIV antibodies after 3 months. The PCR RNA test actually tests for the HIV virus but is not recommended as other testing is more reliable.

I therefore recommend that you repeat your tests after the 3 months exposure time period.

Hello MD,

I am following up on previous question.
I have done an HIV Rapid test at 96 days post exposure. Which cameback negative? Is it conclusive to you? Then I have another question on Monday I had an upper endoscopy done and was under general anesthetia. Can an anesthetia change the result of the antibody test? Test was done on Thursday.

Thank you for your help!

Brief Answer:
HIV test not affected by anesthesia

Detailed Answer:
thanks for contacting HCM.

You are concerned that the anesthesia would affect your HIV test. the HIV test is not at all influenced by anesthesia. I can reassure you you negative test is truly negative.
