Can STD Be Contracted Through Oral Sex?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Jun 2015
Question: What is the likelihood of catching an STD from mutual oral sex with another man who self reports never having disease or symptoms? I read Dr. Hunter Hansfield's opinion and wonder if it is an opinion that is generally shared by other physicians in the field.

Brief Answer:
Unprotected oral sex has a lower risk but it not completely safe

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

Oral sex whether receptive or passive is not without risk and almost all STD's like herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, Hpv, Hiv can be passed on with unprotected Oral sex.

Yes, I understand that is is not without risk. Would you say that the risk is relatively low?

Brief Answer:
Risk is relatively low than vaginal or anal sex

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

It depends. In general risk is considered to be low with Oral sex for partner receiving oral sex but for the partner giving oral sex it is more risky if oral sex also involves ejaculation into mouth.

Thank you. I appreciate your help.

Also, I wonder about urinary tract infection. This is the one and only time I've had a sexual encounter with anyone other than my wife since we've been married for 30+ years. I have noticed that sometimes, I have minor burning a day or so after she has given me oral sex. And I know that prior to my incident this past Friday, that both of us were clean.

What causes it, do you think?

Brief Answer:
I suggest appropriate screening for all STD's

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

As a precautionary measure I would suggest that you should get screened for all STD's including genital herpes, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis.

Minor burning sensation could be due to rough handling during Oral sex. Wait and see how it goes over the next day or so.

Unless there are clear signs or symptoms of an STD like urethral discharge, genital erosions, ulcer, burning on passing urine etc there is no need for any empirical treatment.
However, if any of these signs or symptoms appear you must present yourself for examination by a venereologist.

Moreover, if STD screening tests reveals an infection it should be appropriately dealt with.

Avoid getting sexually involved with your wife till you are declared clean.

How soon can I get a screening and the results?

Brief Answer:
STD testing at appropriate intervals

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Screening for Hiv, syphilis and genital herpes can be done earliest at 1 month after a risky sexual contact.

For HIV i would suggest an HIV DUO test at 1 month. It is highly specific and sensitive.
For syphilis an RPR test can be done at 1 month.
Results at 1 month for Hiv and syphilis are very suggestive but testing for Hiv and Syphilis should be repeated at 3 months for a conclusive diagnosis.

For genital herpes I would suggest an ELISA for Hsv type 1 and type 2 (IgG and IgM). This can be done at 4 weeks and then repeated again at 12 weeks for a conclusive result.

A swab test for gonorrhea and chlamydia would be advisable earliest at 2 weeks.

In the mean time if you develop any signs or symptoms of an STD you should consult a venereologist.
