Question: I have been taking omeprazole for years, last in to see doctor she told me she would like me to get off this med. I forgot to ask why she wanted me off! I also take Prozac 40 each day, B-complex , 1 81 mg Bayer in the mornings. In the evening, I take 1 25 mg Atenolol, 1-50mg alprazolam ( for anxiety) 1 -150 mg Rantidine . I started taking alprazolam because i have insomnia and can't get my heart bead to slow down or shut my brain off to sleep! Could omeprazole the problem or at least part of it

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be a cause of insomnia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Omeprazole very rarely may cause sleep disturbances, being very rare it should not be implicated as a cause of insomnia.

She wants to take it off probably due to its long-term effects on bone and vit B12 deficiency, some other side effects. It may cause osteoporosis and may predispose to fractures on long term use.

If Ranitidine 150 mg twice a day is doing the job then Omeprazole can be stopped.

Hope this helps you and get back if you have any doubts.
Regards

Do you see anything in my medications that I am taking that might cause insomnia or racing thoughts that I can not shut my mind down:

Morning 1 - 81 Mg Bayer
1 Super B-Complex with Vit C
1 - 40 Fluoxetine

Evening 1 - 25 mg Atenolol
1 - 150 mg Rantidine
1 50 Mg. Alprazolam ( Too shut my mind down)

Have also used Tyl PM, Melatonin, and 2 - Sleep - Aids at (Different Times) but still need the Alprazolam, but they make me wake up very tired and last all day! Have not been using any of those for 3 weeks, and getting along with Alrazolam but the doctor says I am becoming dependent on them to sleep! Is that a bad thing?

Brief Answer:
Yes, both fluoxetine and atenolol can cause it

Detailed Answer:
Yes, both Fluoxetine and Atenolol can commonly cause insomnia. So you should discuss with a Psychiatrist regarding change of fluoxetine to other medicine. I exactly don't know the indication for atenolol, if taking for blood pressure then should be changed to telmisartan 40 mg or amlodipine 5 mg once a day.

You can change from alprazolam to Zolpidem 5 mg bedtime or zopiclone. This less likely to give addiction.

It's better also to practice sleep hygiene,
Sleep as long as necessary to feel rested (usually seven to eight hours for adults) and then get out of bed

Maintain a regular sleep schedule, particularly a regular wake-up time in the morning
Try not to forcefully sleep.

Avoid caffeinated beverages after lunch especially during evening hours
Avoid alcohol near bedtime (eg, late afternoon and evening)
Avoid smoking or another nicotine intake, particularly during the evening
Adjust the bedroom environment as needed to decrease stimuli (eg, reduce ambient light, turn off the television or radio).

Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens (laptops, tablets, smartphones, ebooks) before bedtime.

Resolve concerns or worries before bedtime
Exercise regularly for at least 20 minutes, preferably more than four to five hours prior to bedtime.
Avoid daytime naps, especially if they are longer than 20 to 30 minutes or occur late in the day.

Hope this helps you and please get back if you have any doubts.
