Questions and answers on "Nicotine"

I am 61 yrs old overweight and smoke. I want to try nicotine patches and vapor cigs without nicotine. I would like to use a small dose of the patch but I cannot find the doses that are available. Reason for small dose of nicotine: I still work and usually I will smoke 7 cigarettes before going to work. Then I go to lunch smoke 2 cigarettes. Later I will leave around 5 hours later. I have noticed also that while at work I believe that I am craving cigarettes and I will tend to eat a lot of snacks to cover my nicotine cravings and am gaining weight. I also get sleepy which I don't know if that is a part of craving. I am going to see if my cravings and food stop with this method. Do you have any suggestions on how else I can accomplish my cravings for nicotine.

Nicotine lozenge and oral thrush. 60yrold female,5'3", 125 lbs., good general health, no daily medications other than vitamins. In my attempt to quit smoking I recently purchased nicotine lozenges and developed oral thrush. I have now purchased an electronic nicotine system and am concerned the same thing will happen.

wouldn't really expect that... but the ecigs are too new to say it doesn't (rarelY) increase it. Since I see 2-5 people on ecigs every day and NONE of them have thrush it sure isn't common (and.. diabetes, antibiotic use, AIDS, are other causes known for thrush.. HIV is pretty uncommon compared...

hello, my AST level is 41.. should I be concerned? I rarely drink but I quit smoking 2 years ago and i chew a lot of nicotine gum 4mg (10+ per day)

doctor1 MD

Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

I do not see any reason for concern.

The normal range of values for AST (SGOT) is from 5 to 40 units per liter of serum (the liquid part of the blood).

Yours is 41 just above normal.

In absence of any health issue with your there is no need for concern. Again...

Hi, I am substituting tobacco cigarettes with electronic cigarettes. I use to smoke 50grams of rollup tobacco a week for over 10 years. I ve personally tried nicotine patches and NRT products although I personally have had much better success with ecigs... I am just wondering if you can point me to a good scientific study on how ecigs may effect your health when compared to tobacco cigarettes... Even if the study is still in the early stages... thanks, Sheldon

There seems to be a lot of mixed information when it comes to the time frame of your body removing nicotine metabolites (aka cotinine and it's sub metabolites) from the body. I'm a 2 pack a day smoker and I just quit yesterday for a job offer. I need to take a nic drug screen for the job. Can I make it? Also any advice to help speed up the process.

doctor1 MD

Hi and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your question...

There are two reasons why you see so much of variation in the time frame for detection of nicotine levels in nicotine screens:

1) There are different types of tests administered (i.e. saliva, blood, urine, etc.) and each test has...

Health insurance policies are changing. Charging more for smokes so time to just quit. I have a test for nicotine in 40 days. It is a blood test. Will I pass? Or have to wait till next round of testing. Good motivation to quit.

doctor1 MD

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Firstly, I appreciate you for having made the right decision to quit...

Nicotine itself is detectable in the blood or urine usually for less than 24 hours only. However, it is converted into other active metabolites, the most important...

Hi welcome to HCM. Smoking contains nicotine and when released in the blood, it causes narrowing of blood vessels. This puts pressure on the heart which beats faster to try and pump blood into these narrowed vessels. This leads to a rapid pulse that lasts as long as the nicotine effect remains....

I am 35 and never had any major medical concerns until January. I was a smoker for 20 years and stopped in November and got off the nicotine lozenges in january.used I started feeling lightheaded(airhead feeling) constantly from sun up to sun down. I didn t feel like it when I was laying down. Most the time I am confused also and can t react as quick when speaking to someone. I have always been a talker and confident at that. This was everyday for at least 1 month. After 2 weeks I was thinking I was dying because I feared a brain tumor. I went to a doctor and he diagnosed me hypothyroid and told me I need to get my blood cholesterol and blood sugar down by changing my diet. I went from eating a Burger King sausage biscuit and sweet tea every morning to eating oatmeal or Kashi with Soy Milk. I went from eating a bologna, cheese, and mayonnaise sandwich on white bread for lunch to a turkey and mustard on wheat with baked chips. I went from eating a burger and fried chicken sandwich from bugerking for supper to a health choice meal. I would always drink 2 monster energy drinks everyday to just water during the day. I started eating fiber bars for snacks and fruit. I went from having over 40 grams of saturated fat to about 14 grams a day. I was still feeling lightheaded even on the generic thyroid medicine. So by this time I am a mess everyday worrying sick about my health. Doctor granted me an MRI even though he thought nothing was wrong and it came back no abnormalities and they said they couldn t see my sinuses because of the braces on my teeth. I started having a day where I didn t feel confused but 2 days later it was back and would stay for the next 5 days. Went to a endocrinologist and he got me up to 75mg of brand name synthroid and now tells me I am normal. I know my original tsh was 9. He said my testosterone is low and recommended androgel so I started using that 4 days ago. My muscles in my back started hurting me 3 weeks ago. It is not severe everyday. It might be in the lower or mid or upper. My neck has hurt some too while I am looking down for a brief period. 3 weeks was when I switched from the generic thyroid to synthroid. My stomach has been making some crazy sounds and have felt some pains. Notice green stools a couple of days and a black spot in the brown dookie today. I break out and cry because I feel like I m falling apart and that I m going die. The endo said he checked my b12, prostate, red blood, white blood, prolactin, ammoray, sedway. I lost 10 pounds over a 7 week period by changing my diet and worrying myself. My wife said that is normal but I didn t know. I was 200 5 foot 8 and now weigh 190. I am eating a lot but hardly no saturated fat. I have had a problem with my hands falling asleep a lot also.

I use dip (nicotine) every day. At night when going to bed, often feel heart pounding, and it usually takes me a while to fall asleep. Have my own business. We are VERY busy - stressful. 6 3 200#

right before surgery my nicotine urine test came back positive and I do not smoke nor does anyone I hang out with . I hate smoking! How is this possible? BTW, nurse gave me one on the spot and it came out negative. I think it was one to test for cotinine. Thank you.

I am a 6 foot, 165 pound, 26 year old male. I have been a smoker for 8 years. 8 days ago I started using the nicotine patch and since then I have had trouble sustaining an erection. I stopped using the nicotine patch yesterday and decided to quit cold turkey but I am still having trouble sustaining a erection during sex. I never had trouble with this when I was a smoker.
