Are Inflammation Of The Salivary Glands An Indication Of HIV ARS?

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: 16 days ago I had protected sex with a Chinese CSW in Malaysia. My anxiety has approached and exceeded that of panic attacks and have had a range of issues every day with the inability to stop thinking about this. At this point I am not sure what side affects could have been created due to my anxiety.

My face is feeling quite swollen today. Are an inflammation of the Salivary glands an indication of HIV ARS? I have dry mouth and a slight sore throat. No fever, rash or any other issues. Do HIV ARS symptoms come all at once or appear one at a time?

Brief Answer:
No worries

Detailed Answer:
Hello , I am Dr Matin and will be answering your query .
HIV does not spread in your scenario because you had protected sex and there was no case of condom slippage or tear ,
Secondly HIV can't be diagnosed by symptoms , as it causes general symptoms like fever /sore throat/lymph nodes swelling /loose motions/weight loss etc .
Only way to diagnose HIV is by getting blood tested for HIV .
Thirdly ARS does not come that early it usually takes 7-14 days to appear.
So rest assured your risk of getting HIV is negligible , still to buy peace of mind , you may consider to go for HIV testing at base line , 28 days and 90 days of exposure.
Hope this helps.

Yes, it's been 16 days. I was concerned that maybe the condom did tear or was broken and I wasn't aware of it.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question.
Even if the condom did slip or break, the only way you can know your HIV status by going for tests.
Of course if the condom slpss or breaks then chances of acquiring HIV becomes equal to that of unprotected sex and chances of getting HIV through unprotected sex from an infected partner is between 0.1--1 %, which still is on the lower side.
So my suggestion will be to go for HIV tests as the protocol (baeline, 28 and 90 days post exposure) Hope this helps.
