Will There Be Time To Get Off The Medication To Prevent Birth Defects?

I have been on Depakote for over 13 years which i was off them as of Jan 2011...but then this past July I had an episode which no one was around to see the symptoms but the ER put me back on the meds. I am just wondering... if someone would get pregnant while on Depakote..would there be enough time to get off the meds in time to prevent any disorders?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

You will have to talk to your doctor immediately, also make sure you are taking the iron and folic acid supplements to avoid neural tube defects. Your child will be at a high risk for brain and spinal cord defects or a low IQ, please do not discontinue the medication abruptly either. Please speak to your doctor at the earliest.
