Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Will Sudaded Affect The Enzymes Or Cause Any Damage?
My liver enzymes seem to be elevating and there are no obvious issues. All my other blood work came back normal as did my ultrasound. I do have an appointment with a GI next month but have a terrible headache and need to take something. It seems to be sinus related and wanted to know if Sudafed would affect the enzymes or cause any damage.
Sudafed contains pseudoephedrine which is used as a decongestant for conditions including nasal congestion, sinus congestion and eustachian tube congestion, as it shrinks swollen nasal mucous membranes and reduces tissue hyperemia and edema.
Liver related side effects of Sudafed are abnormal liver function tests, acute liver failure, damage to the liver and inflammation etc. In case of liver problems, you may need a lower dose of this medication. A small amount of pseudoephedrine is metabolized in liver. Hence, before starting this medication, you should consult with your prescribing doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
