Let me congratulate you on your
pregnancy.
Iron and
Folic acid are the two essential drugs to be taken during pregnancy for avoiding
anaemia. During pregnancy, the total volume of blood goes on increasing to fulfill the demands of the body and the foetus. However, in this increase, the volume of the fluid part is more than the cells. Thus, the blood becomes dilute. To increase the cellular content and the
haemoglobin in the blood, iron, Folic acid and
proteins are very important. Further, iron consumed by mother also goes to the foetus for its needs and storage in the
liver.
Iron does cause increased acidity in the stomach. This increased acidity and irritation in the stomach is responsible for
nausea and even sometimes vomitting also. But you cannot skip iron during pregnancy. At the most, depending upon your haemiglobin levels and your obstetrician's opinion, you can drop iron tablets for a couple of days in a week.
Since the absorption of the iron is best on the empty stomach, iron is advised to be taken on empty stomach only. If anti acidic drugs are taken to take care of the acidity caused by the iron, the iron absorption is hamphered. So please keep antacids away.
Now a days, in may countries, time released iron spansules are available. Since they release the iron rather slowly as per the need and absorption, they usually do not cause nausea and vomitting.
It the nausea and vomitting are too bothersome, you may have to switch over to the iron injections - that too with obstetrician's opinion.
