Why Am I Spotting Inspite Of Taking Zoelly To Avoid Periods?

Dear Doctor, I was prescribed a pill Zoely to avoid menstruations, as I have a very low level of iron in my blood. However, I have been taking it for 3 months now and the spotting (which is very abundant, if I may use the term, so that I have to wear a pad almost every day) did not stop. The first month was a mess, then with a second box the bleeding stopped for 2 weeks, and around 15 day of my cycle the bleeding returned, till the end of the box. Then, with a third box it stopped again for 2 weeks, and the same scenario followed. I started a 4th box yesterday, and the bleeding still continues... I have a regular check-up twice a year, and the ultrasound seems to be fine. What is it with me?

OBGYN 's  Response
Hi,
I have gone through your query and understood the concern. Whenever hormonal contraception is used, there is a chance of abnormal menstrual pattern during the initial three cycles. This can take the form of inter-menstrual bleeding, heavy bleeding, continuous bleeding or spotting or absent menstruation. Anemia, as in your case, can add to this disturbance. Since you have been bleeding almost continuously for so long, the very purpose of introducing the pill, i.e., to treat anemia, is not being served. You may need to switch the medication or go for some other form. Please contact your consultant for further management. Wish you good health.
