When Playing Golf Felt A Sharp Pain On The Hip. Put Icy Patch On It. Appears Swollen, Red. On Aleve. Suggestions?

My husband was taking a down swing while he was positioned on a small slope, during his golf game. He immediately felt a sharp pain on the left side of his hip. He put icy hot patch on it. The area appears swollen and red, it is about the size of a tennis ball. We are applying an ice pack now and he is taking Aleve.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description, I suspect that your husband could have suffered a soft tissue hematoma.

This will resolve spontaneously with the following measures -

* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medications like Advil or Aleve to help reduce the pain and inflammation.
