When Is Cervical Stitch Required During Pregnancy?
hello i was pregnant and i delivered the baby in the week 26 and the baby died i did some tests and my doctor said that i have a short cervix and ill need to do a cervical stitch the next time i will be pregnant i would like to know is this stitch usefull for my case?would it have any complications?and if i did it that will guarantee that my pregnancy will continue to the 40 week?
Cervical stitch or cerclage is indicated for women with cervical incomptetnce i.e. women whose cervix can not remained completely close during pregnancy as the fetus exerts pressure.
It is usually done between the 13th and 16th week of pregnancy. Cerclage has an appreciable success rate. If the all other diagnosis where excluded by your doctor and cervical incompetence proven to be the diagnosis, then cerclage will be the recommended management in your subsequent pregnancies in which case it will help maintained the pregnancy to an acceptable gestational age. It is not allowed until 40 weeks because of fear that you might go into labor before 40 weeks. If you go into labor with the stitch on, you might rupture your uterus. For that reason it is removed around 32 weeks of pregnancy.
Hope this helps you. Best regards Dr Achuo
