What's Causing Low Hb, Iron Deficiency, Blood & Protein Traces In Urine, More Urination & Weakness All The Time In A 18 Yr Old Female?

My 18 year old daughter has low hemoglobin and is iron deficient. Her recent urinalysis to check for a possible uti showed trace blood and protein in urine and ph level is slightly low abnormal. They are going to have her do another urinalysis to check again. She has abused ibuprofen and tylenol for past few years. It turns, out there is no uti but doctor gave her antibiotic just in case. What do you think is wrong? Oh and she has increased urge to urinate. She is exhausted and weak all the time.and one other thing she has is a chronic abscesses pilodonial cyst.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

Given the history of abuse of ibuprofen and tylenol, the symptoms as mentioned indicate that your daughter might be having Analgesic Nephropathy.
In this condition, there is damage to the renal tubules due to consumption of analgesics.
As a result of this, there is impairment in the functioning of the kidneys, leading to deranged urinary habits, anemia, excretion of proteins in urine.

It can be diagnosed with the help of Ultrasound scan & Non Contrast CT scan of Kidneys.
Depending upon the extent of Kidney damage, necessary management steps can be taken.

So, kindly consult a Nephrologist & discuss regarding the same.
Wishing your daughter a good health.
Take care.
