What Is The Connection Between Scoliosis And Loss Of Cognitive Function?
My 77-year-old mother suffers from severe scoliosis which is beginning to reduce her lung capacity. She is also increasingingly forgetful and does not seem to think clearly. Could there be a connection between the scoliosis and the loss of cognitive function?
The only connection I can think of would be from her decreased lung capacity reducing the oxygen to her brain. There are many possible causes for her loss of cognitive function. Some of these are treatable. This could include thyroid disease, vitamin deficiencies (especially vitamin B12), small strokes, decreased blood flow to the brain etc. She is at the age where Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia start to become more common. I suggest that you get her to her doctor and explain what you are observing. They can then test her for these possibilities and get treatment started if needed. Hope this helps.
