What Is The Cause For Heavy Spotting For 2 Weeks?

I have always had a history of irregular periods. Was diagnosed with PCOS. Recently i took up jogging and now my period has started but won't stop.! I was spotting for 2weeks and it got heavier. It is really heavy also. I haven't had an episode as this since december last year. Could jogging be the cause? What to do?

Hi,

Poly cystic ovarian syndrome presents with irregular periods, anovulation, etc., due to reproductive hormonal imbalance, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, etc. Doing exercises like jogging can improve body mass index, metabolic parameters like total cholesterol, lipid profile, insulin resistance, etc. Thereby, help in correcting PCOS. As you have not had periods since few months, staring of physical exercise might have led to alteration in reproductive hormones and starting of bleeding.

As there is possibility of thick endometrium due to prolonged amenorrhea, bleeding can be heavy. The possible factors that can help you are:
- Antifibrinolytic drugs can help in decreasing the bleeding.
- Hormonal tablets can be taken to control the bleeding and to correct PCOS.
- Continuing the physical exercise.
- Ruling out anemia, blood sugar fluctuations, thyroid hormone abnormalities, etc.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
