What Diet Should A Diabetic With Osteoporosis And Deteriorated Protein Filtration By The Kidneys Take ?

My mother who is diabetic for 20years has been diagnosed with osteoporosis , she has been prescribed gemcal nasal spray for a month with the supplements . She was also recently diagnosed with deterioration in protein filteration by her kidneys. Her creatinine is 1.2 What is the best suggested vegan diet for her to counter balance her medicine intake and her condition. She has had no luck with all consultations contradicting each other. Any help greatly appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
Your description suggests that your mother has landed up with early diabetic Nephropathy( DN)
DN is a known complication of long standing uncontrolled diabetes.
Goals of treatment are to delay the progression of her Nephropathy
Control her blood pressure
Her diabetes should be managed by injection insulin now instead of oral anti diabetic drugs.
Avoid kidney toxic drugs like gentamicin, amikacin etc and avoid pain killers
Prompt control of any urinary tract infection
Low protein and potassium diet is to be given( reduce milk Dals, citrus fruits, coconut water)
Even if her BP is normal some dose of ACE inhibitors or ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKERS should be given.
Thanks

Diabetologist Dr. Pratap VGM's  Response
DEAR SIR/MADAM

IDEALLY SHE SHOULD BE SUPPLEMENTED WITH CALCIUM WITH VITAMIN D3 AND IF POSSIBLE WITAMIN D3 SACHETS WEEKLY ONCE FOR 6 - 8 WEEKS.

SECONDLY IF YOU ARE SUPPLEMENTING HER WITH CALCIUM THEN WATCH OUT FOR RENAL STONES, SO

ULTRASOUND SCANNING OF KIDNEY, URETER AND BLADDER IS VERY ESSENSTIAL

THANKS
